I personally have never gotten anything off of the site because my computer speakers are screwed so right now there would be no point. Not saying I have anything against the people who have or that I might not have gotten some songs if I could have. But reading Sheryl's speech to Congress about the Work for Hire Bill really made me think, yes getting music off the internet is good advertising and marketing but if it becomes too common, artists are going to lose alot of money. Especially ones like Sheryl who do it all (write, record, produce). I know CDs are expensive but they really aren't that bad if you think about all of the work that was put into most of them. Some of the artists arguing about the whole Napster thing are probably just being greedy yes, there are artists like that out there but Sheryl isn't one of them. We all know that Sheryl doesn't do what she does for the money or fame, she does it because she loves to do it. She loves it, she works hard, and I think that she deserves to get her fair share of what is rightfully hers. Cheers Amanda =) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 May 2000 23:37:00 -0700 From: Darren Holmquist Subject: [sheryl-crew] Sheryl Says "Napster is an evil, evil, evil place to go" I just thought I'd throw into the equation, something I learned at a songwriters conference. Artists are STILL being paid on the basis of selling an LP. An Album. Vinyl. How much did they cost in comparison with CD's??? Almost half. It's not Napster that's screwing the artists... it's their record companies. If Sheryl received $1 for the sale of the album, that's $1... from the vinyl price, which was approx. $8-$10. There have been uprisings regarding this pricing issue. And some artists have won, but they got the win by agreeing not to go public. In regards to paying for the recording of her own album.... that's great!! It allows her so much more freedom, and she has ownership of the album. That's a good thing. Unlike Tom Petty who had to file bankruptcy at the height of his popularity, because he could never sell enough records to pay back MCA for all the sessions, promotion, etc. Especially at the rate he was being paid, which was MUCH less than a dollar an album. Sorry for my pontifications... Peace, Darren PS I don't use Napster or MP3.com or anything else like that. I've gone up and looked at them, but saw nothing that I needed. ------------------------------ End of sheryl-crew-digest V3 #150 *********************************
