I have completely different opinion about this.Take Linda Ronstadt for example. She is without a doubt, one of the greatest female artists of all-time, but she has not written any of her songs. What she did instead was, discover good songs written by talented-but-then-not-so-famous writers and made them known to many people. Of course with her great skill of singing, this was possible. Stevie Nicks also cannot play instruments that good like say Sheryl, to write songs just by herself, but she is great even with her singing only (and her presence I'd say). I can name other great singers who don't write (particularly music) themselves, like Mary Black, but I won't. You will learn when you come to know them. I'm in support of Mariah Carey from this standpoint, as she has written most of her songs since her debut album. Just my opinion anyway. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Takuji Shimoda E-mail: soullove@ca2.so-net.ne.jp http://www01.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/ca2/soullove/sheryl/sheryl_home.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Mar 2000 19:24:14 +0100 From: Brigitte and/or Michael Subject: [sheryl-crew] Rock Diva Show I also read about that show that was going to have Sheryl & Stevie Nicks and others in it. I really like to know what happened. We've had enough Diva's who can sing. I understand your feelings of "just singers" and I sometimes have MORE respect for singer-songwriters, but please remember there are VERY talented singers out there who DON'T write their own music. I would include Barbra Streisand, Whitney Houston, and Linda Ronstadt as 3 of my faves. (Now I know Babs has written a few things, and Linda is extremely knowledgeable in music.) There IS some ARTISTRY in crafting a song with your voice-- there is phrasing, tone/pitch, style, etc. -- these singers DO deserve SOME respect. I mean, do you have more respect for Peggy Lee (because she wrote lots of music) than for Ella Fitzgerald because she couldn't write a note?
