hi crew,
there was an article about sheryl's appearance at Dartmouth College in the 
Boston Globe today, so i typed it up for you... I was hoping that there would 
be more than one article in the newspaper in my area since i live fairly 
close to the NH border, but i could only find this one so far..there are 2 
pics as well...one small color and a larger black and white one. please keep

she played for 2 plus hours solo on an acoustic guitar, please email me,

Singer becomes professor for a day:
Pop culture series brings Crow to campus

Hanover, NH - Dartmouth College has made its reputation by inhabiting the 
cliché of a thoughtfully quaint New England school: Students carve ice 
sculptures for their Winter Carnival, the town falls silent after dinner, and 
J.D. Salinger and Noel Coward qualify as celebrities.
But the college's new administration has vowed to change what it sees as an 
anachronistic spirit, first by shutting down the infamous fraternities, and 
yesterday by importing a little celebrity.
Rock star Sheryl Crow lectured and chatted with Dartmouth students as the 
latest guest of the Montgomery Endowment, the college's most prestigious 
visiting fellowship. She joins the ranks of past fellows Saul Bellow, Gerald 
Ford, and Toni Morrison.
Crow is on campus for two days as part of a series called Music Makers and 
Movie Makers - a program that has sparked heated local debate that mirrors a 
national argument on the propriety of including popular culture in scholarly 
curricula.
Barbara Gerstner, the Dartmouth official responsible for bringing Crow to the 
classroom, says that while the choice may seem unconventional, Crow's 
appearance is directly in the line with the spirit of the program.
"Ken and Howell Montgomery wanted a program that would bring people who were 
not necessarily scholars to Dartmouth, to interact with students and serve as 
mentors," Gerstner said, "I think that bringing musicians and movie makers 
here is a terrific way to let the students explore ideas they might not come 
into contact with in the classroom."
Some students, however, believe that pop songs don't belong on the 
intellectual agenda of a rigorous Ivy League college.
"While she may be a talented singer, it's not clear to me that her work 
includes the intellectual and educational component benefiting fellowship." 
said Noah Phillips, a senior from Newton, MA. "Crow may be nice to look at 
and listen to, but I don't see her concert spurring any substantive 
discourse."
Adopting a fairly rigorous schedule yesterday, Crow, a former music teacher, 
lectured at a world music class and ate lunch with a group of 20 students, 
with whom she talked about social activism and the impact of Bob Dylan. Then, 
she played an acoustic concert for 900 people in the College's main 
auditorium, intermittently advocating for land-mine removal.
"I was reading a biography of Aldous Huxley years ago, and what would happen 
in those days was these great writers went around on lecture circuits and 
everyone would go out and see them," Crow said. "It seemed like such a 
fascinating and romantic time to me, that it's always been something I wanted 
to do myself - to go out and act as a mentor."
In recent years, arguments on whether to draw distinction between classical 
education and pop culture have come to the fore. Academic traditionalists 
want to halt a growing movement to include popular works in the curriculum, 
such as current Dartmouth class that treats Dylan's lyrics as poetry and 
subjects them to rigorous academic analysis.
But some scholars contend that the dominant academic canon tends to insist on 
a closed set of books and ideas. They argue that studying mass-appeal art, 
literature, and music is often the best way of understanding cultures in 
general.
"It well may be that the neglect of popular culture by the academy accounts 
for some of the trash that passes under the banner," said William Cook, a 
professor of English at Dartmouth and past department chairman. "To promote 
literacy in its most full sense, we must be concerned with literacy in all 
its modes."
"I would not exclude jazz, rock, and other popular forms from the study of 
music," he added, "for they, deal about the concerns and values of people."
Crow, for her part, said she came to Dartmouth simply to play her music and 
talk to students. She spent the two-hour plus concert cultivating a folk 
aesthetic, playing quiet, well cultivated crafted songs on an acoustic 
guitar, paraphrasing Walt Whitman, invoking Dylan.
Earlier, she gave her own critique of pop culture during the last 10 years, 
noting her "influences and references" seemed markedly different from most 
Dartmouth students, and that she couldn't appreciate their generation's 
infatuation with, say the rap-metal band Limp Bizkit.
But during the concert, the skepticism of hosting a pop singer and the 
generational disconnect faded. Crow charmed the audience into laughter and 
enthusiastic applause.
"I didn't know whether or not having Sheryl Crow play was the best statement 
for the college to make, and I still don't," said Benjamin Patch, a senior 
from Chattanooga, TN. "But the bottom line is she's a great songwriter, and 
she's worth having up here for that alone."
