I know its the same song; different words. I really like that(STTM) song and I think its about how people try to get away with things just because they feel they are "special, smart or cute" or something. Like, Sheryl sings "You got lucky walking across the crowded room" I think that means that you found me and really, you just used me and did not treat me the right way. I think that "scalp" reference was just how the guy will not change even if he got caught a million more times ( i always thoought the lyric was "cannot keep my scalp"(with you)) Later in the song, the "truth comes out". You are nothing but a jerk because you could not even do what you did to me in secret. Several people were witness to that and of course, I was going to find out. To me, the situation is someone cheating on you, possibly with a good friend of yours. Thats how I interpret it. But I'm sure it can be related to many other instances related to backstabbing! Just my opinion! In December of 1998 I ordered about $80 worth of Sheryl CD's which they said they had in hand. I never got anything but a lot of excuses. I asked for my money back but all they are willing to offer is credit. When I get an opportunity, I am going to file a complaint with the Post Office for mail fraud, which I feel is what this was. Since 1996, Tunnel has been promising imports that were "in stock" and charging peoples credit cards. They then stall until the period for you to contest the charge is over, and screw you. I have heard the same tune from dozens upon dozens of people. Tunnel are crooks to the nth degree. The used to advertise in different record collectors magazines, but they can't anymore because no one will accept their ads b/c they have ripped so many people off. Though for some strange reason, the one order I made with them, in the summer of 1996, was filled completely (though it took 3 months). I guess I was the lucky one, because I know countless others who are out of their money. You should definitely file mail fraud charges on them. Some people seem afraid to do it because they were buying bootlegs from Tunnel, but remember, bootlegs are not illegal to buy, just to sell. The guy found it and some music and didn't know what it was. (remember, there was a tape with it also...) Sheryl then later remembered fragments of the songs and made it into a song that landed on an album. This guy reads the notebook and decides to claim the wordes as his own. HEY IT COULD HAPPEN. It would be kinda cool if this was a huge scandal. It's just the media coverage that SHERYL NEEDS, it will surround only her music, not her personal life. There will be a need to PROVE HERSELF on the next record and it will once again sound like the self-titled record, which most agree is sheryl's best work. The 2nd CD had the best music on it. It was really dense and rocked out. Not so introspective and sad... Hopefully for the next album she'll have more popular and contemporary guest artists...like BECK or ODB. Maybe you remember that Sheryl tries to avoid the media -especially the tabloids- because they always change the facts and make up their own. So, at the beginning of the song, she says "we got something, something you could really use and put it on the evening news" or some like that; there she criticizes the fact that the narrator's been caught by a camera that "went from wide to zoom and got you in the act" So at the beginning, it's clear that she refers to the medias and the misinterpretation they make of everything. The song keeps on the same note and at some points it goes "if I come back a million years from now, can I keep my scalp" I guess here "scalp" is a metaphor for head or dignity. The narrator is addressing directly to the media and the fact that he/she wants to keep his/her scalp means that he/she doesn't want to be treated this way anymore because what the media say about the narrator annoy him/her completely for people have a change image of him/her. That phrase then basically means that the narrator wants the oppression from the medias to stop. That was my own interpretation, do what you want out of it. Have a nice day.
