I can't tell you how bummed I was when my pals scored tickets to Sheryl Crow in Central Park and didn't bother to let me in on it. Her gig this summer was a highly publicized event and apparently tickets weren't THAT hard to come by. Grrr! We're not talking just Sheryl Crow - we're talking Sheryl Crow with Keith Richards, Stevie Nicks, Chrissie Hynde, Eric Clapton, the Dixie Chicks and more. It was a night of legends past and present and I fume at the thought of missing out. Alas, all is not lost. Sheryl's latest release, "Sheryl Crow and Friends, Live From Central Park" lets me relive the summer fun without ever leaving my living room. Sheryl proves that she puts on one helluva show. She delivers most of her hits to a more than enthusiastic crowd, - "Everyday is a Winding Road", "My Favorite Mistake", "Leaving Las Vegas", "All I Wanna Do" - proving that her raw quality is truly genuine. The Dixie Chicks join her on a beautiful folk version of "Strong Enough" with really nice organ riffs throughout the song. The second half of the disc features duets with the Rock and Roll Greats: Stevie Nicks ("Gold Dust Woman"), Keith Richards (on the Stone's "Happy"), Eric Clapton ("White Room") and Sarah McLachlan ("The Difficult Kind"). Chrissy Hynde and Crow take "If It Makes You Happy" to an entirely new level with their contrasting grit. Everyone joins in on "There Goes the Neighborhood" and on the encore with a rocking version of Bob Dylan's "Tombstone Blues." The overall show is upbeat and tight (maybe a little too tight at times). All in all, Crow doesn't disappoint and proves that she is more than a gracious host to her legendary guests. Back in the day, Sheryl was a music teacher in Small Town, Missouri. She went out to LA to pursue music and ended up singing back-up for Michael Jackson, as well as George Harrison, Don Henley, Joe Cocker and Rod Stewart. She tried to pursue a record deal despite the fact that most female artists in the late 80's were dance oriented. In 1991, she signed with A&M and released a self-titled debut, only to scrap it because the release was too slick. She returned to the studio to release 1994's "Tuesday Night Music Club", which was inspired by her weekly jam sessions at a popular recording studio. These sessions lent her music a much more raw sound. With the album' s success, Sheryl established herself as a force to be reckoned with. Her follow-up self-titled release proved that Sheryl was much more than a one hit wonder. 13 million record records and 5 Grammies later, Sheryl was here to stay. The best thing about Sheryl Crow is that she bridges the gap between classic rock and contemporary sound. It is no surprise that most of her guests are also her influences. Her fresh infusion of blues, country and rock makes the perfect welcome mat for these veterans to return, while simultaneously exhibiting a mutual respect for the mistress of ceremonies. Needless to say, it was a good time had by all and I still wish I had been there. Such is life. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - --------------------------- "Not to know what happened before we were born is to remain perpetually a child; for what is the worth of a human life unless it is woven into the lives of our ancestors in the record of history." - Cicero, 106-43 BC - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ----------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jan 2000 18:32:15 +0100 From: "David Ribeiro" Subject: [sheryl-crew] Last Day Crew, Whoever still wants to participate in the perfect setlist poll please send me your 15 songs by the end of today. I was browsing in the book store today and there was a book by Rolling Stone mag, you know, one of their music books. And in it there was a self-portrait that Sheryl sketched in '94, it was really cute, it looks like Sheryl has more drawing talent than she is letting up, It was John Lennon-ish. If I get back to the store, or if I remember, I'll post the book, so you guys can go check it out! Hey, hey guys, sheryl is going to get her online store: www.sherylcrowdirect.com also on the official site you can download a flash card. It's a commercial for the Central Park cd and has There Goes the neighboorhood as sound and some drawings of Sheryl (well they are made to look like drawings, could be edited pics also), reminds me a little of the Running Down A Dream video of Tom Petty. A question, I found the upcoming store while searching for another store where I saw some Sheryl items up for sale, such as a metal keychain. Anyone know where that was located?? I had to make it a 16 track set list cause I had two songs at the bottom (15th and 16th) with the same vote count. Here it is: Order (Song Name, Number of Votes, Rank, Vote Percentage) I Shall Believe, 40, 1, 6.06% If It Makes You Happy, 31, 2, 4.70% The Difficult Kind, 27, 3, 4.09% A Change, 26, 4, 3.94% Anything But Down, 26, 5, 3.94% Everyday Is A Winding Road, 26, 6, 3.94% Home, 26, 7, 3.94% Strong Enough, 26, 8, 3.94% Am I Getting Through, 24, 9, 3.64% There Goes The Neighborhood, 22, 10, 3.33% It Don't Hurt, 19, 11, 2.88% My Favorite Mistake, 19, 12, 2.88% Leaving Las Vegas, 18, 13, 2.73% Redemption Day, 17, 14, 2.58% Mississippi, 16, 15, 2.42% Run, Baby, Run, 16, 16, 2.42% Some interesting facts, and I find them really interesting... all 16 songs are from her 3 albums, no unreleased songs, or b-sides made the cut, and lots of them were submitted! Another interesting facts, out of 16 songs, only 4 were from Tuesday Night Music Club (25%), 5 songs from Sheryl Crow (31.75%), and an amazing 7! from The Globe Sessions (43.75%). Notice the votes' percentage grew by album, from 1st to the 3rd, I find that extremely interesting, perhaps meaning Sheryl's music gets better and better as she gets older lol. Song #1, #2, and #3 are also from the 1st, 2nd and 3rd albums respectively as well, crazy facts. Not featured here, but there were 44 voters who participated, making it a total of 660 votes, and 71 different songs voted. Last by not least, the so called "throw away track", yet the one that got her famous track "All I Wanna Do" didn't make the final cut. Well, I doubt you have had as much fun as I have with this poll, but if you did, cool! This was the only fun thing I had to do all week believe me... That's it! David PS - If anyone wants the excel file I worked on to get this e-mail me and I'll send it to you.
