And I found this little program today, called Guitar Pro, you can download a demo at: http://www.guitar-pro.com comes in lots of different languages. And what this program does is converting midifiles to tab (including bass) so you have to understand how to read tab. They also have some songs already available at their site. Like My Favourite Mistake. Good thing about this is that you can hear how it is suppose to sound. Also I found this program called Cakewalk Guitar Studio. Demo available at: http://www.cakewalk.com (if you want the full version, contact me privately) Which does about the same thing, only, there's a fretboard in the bottom of the screen showing you were to put your finger. I wish I could play really good already, cause I just had 7 lessons and these programs open up a lot of possibilities. Incidentally, thank you for passing that on, Ms. Clark--come the revolution, Toronto _dies_. From a personal standpoint, I always considered 'Tomorrow Never Dies' to be one of the classic Bond songs. Commercially successful here? Of course not. Last Bond theme that made a wave here was 'Goldfinger', a good 33 years previous. TND was always what I considered the epitome of a Bond song, namely a slightly modified torch song, or something similar. This came up kind of obliquely on fumbling-towards-ecstasy, and I said much the same thing there. One chap said something about 'Shirley could have done better'. My reprinted reply follows: "Do remember that there's a standard, set in the 1960s, that has to be followed pretty closely. Cubby Broccoli's people probably don't care about "could have done better" when the Bond mythos is conformed to. What is that, you might ask? Well--look at "Tomorrow Never Dies". It's arguably a torch song, something you might hear in the background of a swank club, perhaps with a baccarat table, where a mysterious and exotic woman is draped over the arm of some evil-looking dude, while the hero walks calmly up, introduces himself, wins at baccarat, and walks off with the girl. Sound familiar? I did kinda question the whole reason for picking Shirley Manson & Garbage for the song, 'cause well, they don't exactly fit the mold established by the woman who sang 'Goldfinger' and the other artists who did the Bond songs. But after listening, it's a decent fit, although I personally would have tried to get Sheryl Crow again. Between Tina Turner's "Goldeneye" and her "Tomorrow Never Dies", those are arguably my two favorite Bond songs." Still holds relevant IMO; some of the songs from the late Moore and entire Dalton periods are _bad_. Hell, the song to my favorite non-Brosnan one (Moonraker) is detestable. "From Russia with Love" is passable; better than the one for "Diamonds are Forever". Admittedly, my judgement on this is jaundiced by the fact that I'm both a fan of Sheryl Crow and of the Bond franchise, and this contributes to my opinion that TND is a damned good song. Objectively, yes, it should have been written with her vocal range more in mind; to this layman, it sounded like a few of the notes were strained. Summary? This is the work of a hack journalist, doing what those jackals do best, taking people into confidence and then coming up with some half-ass conclusion in post-production that the interviewee would have frowned upon. All in the hopes of generating controversy, so they'll be noticed as hard-hitting and edgy--but in this case, it seems the writer failed. C'est la vie, you schmuck. Time to go get my TND DVD and watch it again to hear the song. Michael ------------------------------ End of sheryl-crew-digest V2 #384 *********************************
