Tuesday night (Sept. 14) in New York City, American Express produced Central Park in Blue, an outdoor concert featuring Sheryl Crow and an assortment of rock giants. Tickets for this free concert, in the park's sprawling East Meadow, could only be obtained from American Express employees, who spent Tuesday roaming the streets giving passes to surprised fans. The night was also distinguished by a level of organization rarely found at concerts; the event was scheduled to begin at 8:00PM, and that was the exact time that Crow and her band hit the stage. Crow was beaming when she greeted the crowd, and wasted no time with introductions before kicking things off with "A Change." Thousands of ticket holders danced and sang along to "Anything But Down," "Can't Cry Anymore," "Leaving Las Vegas" and "It Don't Hurt." The mellow vibe gave way to cheers of excitement as Crow introduced her first guest, Sarah McLachlan. The Lilith founder sat at the piano and played her own "Angel," accompanied by Crow, who spent much of the song teasing McLachlan by yanking her mic almost out of reach. "This next song was written by Axl Rose," Crow announced, before playing GNR's "Sweet Child of Mine." She wrapped up with "Am I Getting Through" and "All I Wanna Do," and then the band took a few minutes before the "real" show -- the hour-long broadcast on FOX -- began at 9:00 p.m. Comic legend Bill Murray was the host for this second half of the evening. He introduced Crow, who took to the stage for the second time with a rousing "Every Day Is A Winding Road." Crow then welcomed the Dixie Chicks, who joined her for the country-tinged "Strong Enough." "These girls have the No. 1 record on the charts this week," Crow acknowledged, "so I hate them." Crow's next guest needed no introduction, and received none. The Chicks quickly exited the stage to make room for Stevie Nicks, who performed "Gold Dust Woman." Crow and her live band played "My Favourite Mistake" and "Mississippi," before bringing on Chrissie Hynde for a loose, fun "If It Makes You Happy." The already elated crowd went crazy when the two were joined by the an unannounced guest, Keith Richards. "This is 'Happy'," he said, before leading Crow and Hynde through the Exile On Main Street classic, followed by "Sweet Little Rock and Roller." McLachlan returned to the stage, and she and Crow slowed things down with a lovely "The Difficult Kind." The audience was mesmerized by McLachlan, whose voice and stage presence seemed to fill the park. Jaws dropped further when another rock legend, Eric Clapton, hit the stage and led the band through Cream's "White Room" and Jimi Hendrix' "Little Wing." Whatever the truth about the rumours linking the two romantically, there is no doubt that Crow and Clapton make a great musical couple. Crow took the spotlight again for a rocking "There Goes The Neighbourhood," then closed the show on a high note by bringing back to the stage all of her guests for the evening. The Dixie Chicks played violin behind Sarah McLachlan, Crow danced with Hynde and Nicks, and Clapton helped Murray with the words as the show closed with an all-star performance of Bob Dylan's "Tombstone Blues." Dylan probably wouldn't have known what to make of the jam session, or of audience members singing along -- it was never intended to sound so happy. - -- Matt Sager == Jeffrey Jerrold Chua | http://Come.To/JeffreyOnline Page me with Urgent in subject or http://PageJeffrey.OnTheWeb.Nu Bad Trader Alert: DAVID HASTIE E-mail Address: dmhastie@flash.net Address: 317 Greenbriar, Baytown TX 77520, USA ICQ UINs: 3334010, 41479631 & 46455018 AOL Instant Messenger: touch17 Do your part for the Anti-Bad Trader Campaign!
