Katie ();) "I want to be your firewalker," Liz Phair. - ------------------------------------------------------------- Sheryl Crow, Semisonic Get Intimate On Big Stage She offers emotion; they provide some edge. Contributing Editor Eric Schumacher-Rasmussen reports: MADISON, Wis. -- The crowd at Wednesday night's Sheryl Crow/Semisonic show was sparse (only 3,000 or so people in the Dane County Coliseum, which was set up to hold nearly twice that many), but those who were there saw that good things do come in small packages. The Coliseum took on the feel of a large theater, despite the hockey-rink acoustics, and both acts tried to make the show feel as intimate as possible. Openers Semisonic came on with a version of "Singing in My Sleep" (RealAudio excerpt) that was considerably edgier than the recorded take. Playing in front of a curtain that hid Crow's larger set, though, the power-pop band still seemed a bit uncomfortable on an arena stage. Rather than huddling close together as they would at the clubs and theaters they've recently played, the trio spread out across the stage, with lead singer Dan Wilson and bassist John Munson standing 20 feet apart and drummer Jacob Slichter between them. The boyishly cute Wilson, clad in an outfit that can only be described as a puke-green version of a fighter pilot's jumpsuit, did his best to egg the crowd on -- he engaged fans in a call-and-response during "Delicious" -- but neither he nor Munson took advantage of the space they had to move around. Munson, who sang lead vocals for "This Will Be My Year," did display some stage presence, though. The trio's sound was solid, with Wilson and Slichter picking up keyboards to fill out the guitar-heavy mix, and after a few slower songs they closed on a high note with their signature tune, "Closing Time," which suggested they're on their way to becoming as formidable in arenas as they are in theaters. Craig Werner, a 47-year-old Madisonian who said he loves Semisonic's album Feeling Strangely Fine (1998) for its pop songcraft, was disappointed in the band's live show. "I've seen too many middle-of-the-road white rock bands to be impressed easily," he said. "They need to work on their stage presence and their set sequencing." Crow demonstrated just how effective the right mix of technique and emotion can be onstage. Sporting newly shorn locks and wearing a tight, purple, long-sleeve shirt and deep-blue work jeans, Crow seemed relaxed and assured, and sang with more confidence and range than on previous outings. Fronting a six-piece band that included keyboards and, at times, violin and cello, Crow re-created the studio-meets-the-living-room feel of her albums. Opening with "Maybe That's Something" and a harder-rocking version of "A Change," she went on to play a set split fairly evenly between each of her three albums. A backdrop of films that ranged from abstract watercolor washes to old newsreel footage to animated pictures of Bill and Hillary Clinton (during "All I Wanna Do is Have Some Fun") provided a strong visual impact even if it didn't add much to the music. Much of Crow's most recent album, The Globe Sessions (1998), focuses on romantic loss, a subject she addressed with humor when she introduced "It Don't Hurt" as "about the crazy things you do when someone breaks your heart, like cut your hair." The sequence of "Anything But Down" and "My Favorite Mistake" (RealAudio excerpt), which she followed with a cover of Ace's 1975 hit "How Long," was delivered with an emotion that sometimes gets lost in her albums' slick production. Crow took a break from the "Hello, Madison"-type comments between songs to address Tuesday's school shooting in Littleton, Colo. "We have to raise our kids with love and teach them the right way to live," she said. Her backing band, particularly guitarist Peter Stroud and violinist Lorenza Ponce, stretched out with solos that breathed new life into well-worn hits such as "Every Day Is a Winding Road" and ballads such as "Riverwide." Still, one wondered what she would be like with a band she has a real relationship with (like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers) rather than a collection of hired guns. Crow's set, like Semisonic's, faltered a bit when she moved from ballad to rocker, leaving half the crowd sitting while the rest stood back up. For most of the show, though, the 20- and 30-something couples and families that made up most of the audience remained standing. "After a while, a lot of the songs started to sound the same," said Ana Garrett, 25, who spent most of the show dancing nonetheless. "She had a lot of energy, though. I thought the videos really helped keep the show interesting." - ------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.sonicnet.com/artists/ai_singlestory.jhtml?id=513706&ai_id=980 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Apr 1999 10:37:35 -0400 From: CSmith@snl.com Subject: RE: sheryl-crew-digest V2 #103 OK, Lots of stuff to reply to here. First off, I plugged my laptop into my home stereo and taped the Webcast. The sound quality is FAR from great, since I only have a 56k modem, but it is a tape. It cut off the end of Home on me, unfortunately. But if anyone is dying for a copy, email me privately. Next, I don't know why, but I totally agree that there is something that connects I Shall Believe and Difficult Kind, which are probably overall my two favourite Sheryl songs. I felt that the first time I heard Difficult Kind. As far as how I got into Sheryl, I heard All I Wanna Do a million times on radio and MTV, and thought "this is OK, but nothing special," and never heard anything else off TNMC at the time. Then a couple years ago I started going to see a local band that covered EDIAWR and A Change a lot, and she did such good covers that I went out and bought SC to hear the originals, and the second Maybe Angels came on my CD player I knew I was on to something good. Now Sheryl is one of my favourite artists of all time. No one else whose first album came out in the 90s in on that list. I also remember I had been listening to and loving SC for a while before I suddenly realized "hey, this is the 'All I Wanna Do' grrrl!" Oh, and the band that first turned me on to Sheryl? I heard Sheryl when she became big with "All I Wanna Do" But I didn't really like her then. Radio over played her songs and she was little too pop-ish. It wasn't until "If it Makes You Happy" that made me fall in love with her. You can say she rocked my world. She simply sang her ass off on that song. I saw the video first, and at first, I couldn't tell it was Sheryl. She didn't look like Sheryl and she didn't sound like the TNMC Sheryl. My votes goes for "If It Makes You Happy". Also her second CD is the first ever Sheryl CD I bought. I have so many now, I lost count... Naoto _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? It moved up 4 spots from #21. The weird thing is he said Sheryl brought a house in LA and then brought the house next to it cause she liked the second house too, and after she brought that house, she brought the house next to that cause she liked it too. So supposedly, now she has three houses right next to each other in LA. Does anyone know if this is right? Right after that, he said Sheryl was 36 which also wrong, she's 37. BTW, I brought Sheryl Crow, my first Sheryl cd after I heard ITMYH, but I liked Strong Enough and Can't Cry Anymore before that, but I didn't buy TNMC till after. Have a nice day everyone! The first song that got me hooked was AIWD also. I had heard it on the radio sooooooooooooo much that I didn't really dig it until one evening I was watching the Grammy's and she performed the song. There was just something about her that touched me....it's corny I know, but it's true. I think a lot of it is because she grew up in the midwest, like myself... and she had a lot of the same influences in music as I did. After the Grammy's, VH-1 interviewed her and I was really impressed with her as a person. The next day I went to the store and bought TNMC. The rest, as they say, is history. :-) Dee ------------------------------ End of sheryl-crew-digest V2 #104 *********************************
