So I will have to wait until Thursday for the repeat (there is a god). But just in case I miss that one as well (Heaven forbid), who watched, how was it? We'll miss you #99. Goodbye Gretzky. Oh yes, there was the Man in Black himself. But that opening was dynamite. I wouldn't have pictured Sheryl dueting with Willie, nor would I have figured that Willie could have been overshadowed that much by any artist, but Ms. Crow accomplished it with a blazing performance. The rest of the show, I thought, was rather pedestrian, except for that electrifying moment when Wyclef Jean sang "Delia's Gone" and Sheryl came back on stage to sing with Emmylou Harris and Mary Chapin Carpenter. I did like Bob's version of "Train of Love," but I faulted the camerawork that never showed pedal steel guitar player Bucky Baxter. I did find Dylan's dancing somewhat charming and he was obviously enjoying the moment. Springsteen's "Give My Love to Rose" was heartfelt, I guess, but rather pedestrian. U2's "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" was a disservice to the song, but technically was the best of the remote spots. But the only moment that really rivaled Sheryl's and Willie's opening and the Wyclef Jean bit, was the ending when those familiar words "Hello, I'm Johnny Cash" were heard and the man himself launched into "Folsom Prison Blues." Listening to Johnny blaze through that song with a backup band that seemed that they were letting loose 18 months of pent-up adrenalin, I was convinced that, once again, age doesn't have to be a factor. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Apr 1999 12:23:58 -0500 (CDT) From: "Michael L. I haven't seen her like that on tv in a long time. maybe it was b/c she was playing soemthing different from her own stuff for a change. the rest of the show was ok. i suppose if i was familiar with Johnny Cash's music i would have been more into it. The trio of Sheryl, Emmylou Harris and Mary Chapin-Carpenter was cool though, esp. since Sheryl played the accordian on that one. I don't know why I think Sheryl is so cool when she playes the accordian, but she is. i don't think anyone else playing the accordian would have that same effect. here's this major rock star and she whips out an accordian and can play it well.it's just fun. i also liked Dave Matthews' performance too. is it just me or has he gained a lot of weight lately? i wonder what that's all about. some of the other acts were pretty lame, like U2. do you think they could have tried any less to put on an enthused perforamnce? well that's just my take on the whole thing, nothing else really stands out in my mind. Sheryl's performance was great though so if you can catch the repeat i would highly recommend it.
