More Bob Dylan than Mick Jagger (to name two of her obvious influences), she seemed cold, even remote at times. She had no trouble milking applause - working "Dallas" into her stage banter time and time again. But you often got the feeling that being in the spotlight is more of a job than a joy for her." The guy doesn't know what he's talking about. She never seemed cold or remote and certainly was enjoying herself on stage. Even if she was like Dylan - cold and not very talkative - which she wasn't, Dylan puts on a damn good show too. Anyway he did like the addition of the violin and cello. I think it made a major difference in her sound this time. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Mar 1999 14:30:38 -0800 From: The Na-Na Girl Subject: sheryl t-hirts Hi people! how are you doing? i hope everyone is fine! well, i'm writting to ask you a favor... More Bob Dylan than Mick Jagger (to > name two of her obvious influences), she seemed > cold, even remote at times. I have to agree with this reviewer. I think he found a very polite way of saying that she's not too exciting. He even did it by way of a compliment: comparing her to Dylan. I think that Sheryl is an amazing musician and since she played an instrument during EVERY song, I think it is difficult for her to show her enthusiasm. About two weeks before seeing Sheryl last week in Orlando, I saw Garbage and Alanis. Both Shirley Manson and Alanis were way into the performance. Even though one of Shirley Manson's arms was in a sling, she was jumping around kicking, punching the air with her other arm. A great adrenaline pumping performance. Alanis stumbled across the stage like some spastic for most of the concert, swaying and sliding to the beat of her songs. Occassionally at the end of a song she would do some freak dance or jump in a circle to the point of certain dizziness. While I enjoyed the fact that both of these performers were into their music, I didn't respect the fact that neither played an instrument the entire concert. I was thinking about this because when I went to the Lilith Fair last year (with Jen from this list. Hi Jen, I will write soon. Just got back into town from spring break.). I really enjoyed Joan Osborne and Paula Cole's performances. They were amazing jumping around full of energy. But I was MESMERIZED by Lisa Loeb and Mary Lou Lord, two women who stand up on stage and let their music speak for them as they strum their guitars. I appreciated their performances more, but I feel guilty saying that Joan Osborne may be the best performer I've ever seen. Do you know what I mean? Musicians like Sheryl, Mary Lou Lord, and Lisa Loeb are tied down on stage because they are integral to the music they have created. Another thing that makes me think of this is recently Lisa Loeb was on the Roseanne show. Roseanne was saying how she knew all of the lyrics to Stay and others of Lisa's songs. Somehow Madonna came up into the conversation. Roseanne tried comparing the two artists right there with Lisa in front of her. Lisa said that she considered Madonna a dancer, not a singer. Roseanne thought her to be a singer and went on forever wondering if this was a generational difference. The answer is no. Lisa views people like herself as more talented. She didn't say this herself and I'm not trying to say that she is conceited at all. But there is a difference I think when someone PLAYS their music and just doesn't jump around and sing to it. Madonna dances while performing. Lisa sees her as dancing to music. Lisa sees herself as playing the music. I hate to put words into her mouth, but this is what I am interpreting what she to mean. Does anyone here understand what I mean? I hope not to have offended fans of any of the artists I've mentioned either. I just wanted to make an illustration. I do like the music of all of the artists I've mentioned above. While I enjoyed the fact >that both of these performers were into their music, I didn't respect the >fact that neither played an instrument the entire concert. Interesting comparison because I also saw Garbage and Alanis on March 17th and saw them in separate concerts back in October. Shirley Manson is definitely an exciting performer. I was also surprised how much dancing she could do with one arm in a sling. BTW I have never found out why she had on a sling. One explanation she gave at another show was that she broke her arm beating up Celine Dion with a Grammy statue :) Garbage's March show was essentially a shortened version of their October show but I could see them several more times and not get bored simply because of Shirley's enthusiastic performance. I was disappointed in Alanis both times I saw her. The October show was a "rehearsal" for her big tour. It was at a small venue, around 900 people, and, even though she did the swinging, twirling, etc., I felt some coldness in her performance. I felt the same way about her March 17th performance. Part of it I think is due to the songs from her second CD which are more somber than the first CD. Also I feel like her spinning and twirling are more for her than the audience. I thought Sheryl was a very "warm" performer. She had a rapport with her band and the audience. I think her playing guitar while singing adds to the excitement because she expresses her enthusiasm through "attacking" the guitar, similar to a blues guitarist. I also think Sheryl's band contributed greatly to the show. The reviewer talked about the "symphonic rock" aspect of her show that the cello and violin brought that tended to raise the performance above the normal rock concert sound. Either way, being compared to Dylan can never be taken as a cut. The last time I saw Dylan I was totally amazed at how this rock legend in his mid 50's could stand on the stage almost stone cold and still have the audience madly dancing in the aisles. I was just very pleased with Sheryl's performance. This is the third time I've seen her and I feel she has matured both as a songwriter and a performer and that she still has several years of good performances left in her. I saw Lucinda Williams earlier in the week and, even though Lucinda is a well recognized songwriter, she lacks the enthusiatic performance abilities of Shirley Manson or Sheryl. Of course this isn't a totally fair comparison as Lucinda is country/folk and the other two are rock, but it was still a comparison in my mind seeing them so close together over a two week period.
