If you were stranded on a desert island and could take along only one member of the popular klatch of 1990s female singer-songwriters, it would have to be Sheryl Crow. Jewel whines too much. Natalie Merchant is too deep. Alanis Morissette has all those metaphysical philosophies, not to mention a passel of unsent letters to old boyfriends. By comparison, Crow, who performed Friday night at the UCF Arena, is only rock 'n' roll - and she likes it. "I know you're just waiting for the queen to come out and rock the house," opening act Eagle-Eye Cherry told the audience midway through his 40-minute set. Crow did not disappoint the nearly sold-out crowd. Dressed in a black sleeveless top and matching skintight slacks, the five- time Grammy Award-winner delivered an energetic set that drew equally from her 1998 album The Globe Sessions, her self-titled 1996 sophomore release and Tuesday Night Music Club, her 1993 debut. Crow counts the Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen among her major influences. On stage, no one would mistake her for the demonstrative Springsteen or Mick Jagger, but the band rocked solidly with an unpretentious style. Often, songs were accompanied by psychedelic images projected on three huge video screens that opened up behind the ensemble toward the audience. A belly-dancer, as seen through a fish-eye lens, gyrated during the opening song, "Maybe That's Something." Swirls of deep volcanic reds and soothing blues blended with geometric shapes during "A Change (Would Do You Good)." The idea, presumably, was to give the audience something to see other than the band, which wasn't that active on stage. Occasionally, though, the visuals were distracting. Was that an eyeball rotating wildly during "It Don't Hurt"? Another image in the same song looked like cucumber slices. The special effects didn't detract from Crow's voice, which was strong and expressive. She showcased it on "If It Makes You Happy," with its soaring chorus supported by a wall of background vocals and electric guitars. The band ranged from four to six players, including Lorenza Ponce on violin and Matt Brubeck on cello. The strings added a nice texture to such songs as "Riverwide" and "Sweet Rosalyn." Judging from Friday's show, there's more than enough musical talent to leave the slide show at home. - --------------------------------------------- 'Hem... excuse me? Couldn't the guy write more about Sheryl and not so much on the video screens?! That's one thing I hate about our reviewers! They always concentrate too much on the tiniest things! One thing I'll will say about the video screens is I really didn't pay much attention to them cuz you know where I had my attention focused. I will say that I did see Bill and Hillary Clinton pop up when she sang "I'm sure he's Bill, Billy or Mac..." during All I Wanna Do. It cracked me up soooo badly! Another thing I was surprised the guy didn't mention is Peter didn't play for a little while in the beginning cuz a string broke on his guitar and he had to replace the guitar. Well, shortly after that, he got another guitar too. This is one thing they would automatically write up in a review. Geez! They're so picky! Well, of course, we all know that Sheryl can rock the house and who needs a review to tell us how well she did when you just need to ask a fan? K, call me corny for watching, but the plot was something about this kid taking this chick out on a date and some other boy being jealous and their confrontation goes like this: Kid w/o girl: "So, you took her out?" Kid w/girl: "Yup." Kid w/o girl: "Where'd you go?" Kid w/girl: "Concert. Sheryl Crow. We're here for dessert." *smile* I just thought that was funny. Not sure when the show was first aired, but I'm sure it was when she wasn't touring. Maybe they figured that she tours so dang much anyway that whenever the show aired in syndication that she'd be on tour anyway... ... or it could just be a sitcom coincidence, and I just think way too much about these things :o) Michele PS: She dumped them both at the end ;o) * * * * * * "You dream it, and then you do it..." ~ inspiration by Sheryl Crow * http://welcome.to/SherylCrow~IShallBelieve Netword: I Shall Believe * "Sweet like candy to my soul, sweet you rock and sweet your roll..." ~ Dave Matthews Band * { icq: 21761301 / aol im: dmb grrrl } * * * * * * ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Mar 1999 23:49:14 +0800 From: "Jeffrey Jerrold Chua" Subject: Sheryl Crow Gives Good Rock In Miami Show Sheryl Crow Gives Good Rock In Miami Show Sheryl Crow rolled into Miami on Thursday (March 17) for the second date of her tour with equal parts grace and strut. Bouncing on a stage at the James L. Knight Center that resembled a high-budget rock video, complete with a video screen triad, bright lights, and the requisite dramatic intro, Crow proceeded to deliver a well-balanced set. A keen sense of selection kept attendees enthralled by punching in energetic and popular numbers at the perfect spot. For example, The Globe Sessions' first single, "My Favorite Mistake," lifted crowd volume early as the second song in the set list. Crow showed off just how musically ambidextrous she is by frequently rotating between guitar and bass (she wrote much of the new record on the four-stringed instrument). Early shows in tours are usually plagued with some sort of drama or turmoil, yet this performance was unusually solid. Considered by some to be a classic rock gal, Crow took her ode to Bob Dylan, "Mississippi," (a song which Dylan wrote and gave to her to record on The Globe Sessions) to a crescendo of distortion and sing-along harmony. Somewhere around the middle of the set, she encouraged the crowd to vote with their minds and not their media influence -- managing, once again, to make a point without making the audience feel as if they were trapped on an episode of Face the Nation (ala the Indigo Girls). Simply put, Crow has definitely come into her own as a performer and as a songwriter. Carrying the weight of a show on one's back takes style and finesse, and she displayed both, working the crowd with subtleties such as substituting the word "Miami" in as many places as possible. Highlights included "Leaving Las Vegas," which received a powerful spit-shine ending and a seemingly impromptu jam that could have lasted another 20 minutes and still hit the mark. As she winded down with two more favorites, "All I Wanna Do" and the second encore's finishing blow "Every Day Is a Winding Road," there wasn't a body in a seat as Crow came full circle with the evening. Opener Eagle-Eye Cherry did his thing to a well-received response from those who checked in early enough to see him perform catchy hooks, such as his cross-format hit "Save Tonight." When all was said and done both parties gave the crowd what they paid for: a fine rock and roll show. - Adrian Gregory Glover For more information on: Sheryl Crow at: http://p0.com/r.d?tgmMFS5gE=musicblvd/cgi-bin/tw/6019_42_16303 ______________________________________________ Today's news has been brought to you by: John Bitzer, Editor in Chief, Music Boulevard johnb@allstarmag.com Carrie Borzillo, News Editor, allstar carrie@allstarmag.com and our fine staff of writers and freelancers...
