Hey Crew, Well, one good warning deserves another: *************************************************** WARNING, CAUTION, DANGER, AND BEWARE! Gullibility Virus Spreading over the Internet! *************************************************** WASHINGTON, D.C.--The Institute for the Investigation of Irregular Internet Phenomena announced today that many Internet users are becoming infected by a new virus that causes them to believe without question every groundless story, legend, and dire warning that shows up in their inbox or on their browser. The Gullibility Virus, as it is called, apparently makes people believe and forward copies of silly hoaxes relating to cookie recipes, email viruses, taxes on modems, and get-rich-quick schemes [perhaps conspiracy theories should be included here]. "These are not just readers of tabloids or people who buy lottery tickets based on fortune cookie numbers," a spokesman said. "Most are otherwise normal people, who would laugh at the same stories if told to them by a stranger on a street corner." However, once these same people become infected with the Gullibility Virus, they believe anything they read on the Internet. "My immunity to tall tales and bizarre claims is all gone," reported one weeping victim. "I believe every message and sick child story my friends forward to me, even though most of the messages are anonymous." Another victim, now in remission, added, "When I first heard about Good Times, I just accepted it without question. After all, there were dozens of other recipients on the mail header, so I thought the virus must be true." It was a long time, the victim said, before she could stand up at a Hoaxees Anonymous meeting and state, "My name is Jane, and I've been hoaxed." Now, however, she is spreading the word. "Challenge and check whatever you read," she says. Internet users are urged to examine themselves for symptoms of the virus, which include the following: *the willingness to believe improbable stories without thinking *the urge to forward multiple copies of such stories to others *a lack of desire to take three minutes to check to see if a story is true - - --------------------------------- T. C. is an example of someone recently infected. He told one reporter, "I read on the Net that the major ingredient in almost all shampoos makes your hair fall out, so I've stopped using shampoo." When told about the Gullibility Virus, T. C. said he would stop reading email, so that he would not become infected. Anyone with symptoms like these is urged to seek help immediately. Experts recommend that at the first feelings of gullibility, Internet users rush to their favorite search engine and look up the item tempting them to thoughtless credence. Most hoaxes, legends, and tall tales have been widely discussed and exposed by the Internet community. Courses in critical thinking are also widely available, and there is online help from many sources, including * Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html * Symantec Anti Virus Research Center http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/index.html * McAfee Associates Virus Hoax List http://www.mcafee.com/support/hoax.asp * The Urban Legends Web Site http://www.urbanlegends.com * Urban Legends Reference Pages http://www.snopes.com * Datafellows Hoax Warnings http://www.Europe.Datafellows.com/news/hoax.htm - - --------------------------------- Those people who are still symptom free can help inoculate themselves against the Gullibility Virus by reading some good material on evaluating sources, such as * Evaluating Internet Research Sources http://www.sccu.edu/faculty/R_Harris/evalu8it.htm * Evaluation of Information Sources http://www.vuw.ac.nz/~agsmith/evaln/evaln.htm * Bibliography on Evaluating Internet Resources http://refserver.lib.vt.edu/libinst/critTHINK.HTM Lastly, as a public service, Internet users can help stamp out the Gullibility Virus by sending copies of this message to anyone who forwards them a hoax. *************************************************** This message is so important, we're sending it anonymously! *************************************************** Forward it to all your friends right away! Don't think about it! This is not a chain letter! This story is true! Don't check it out! This story is so timely, there is no date on it! This story is so important, we're using lots of exclamation points! For every message you forward to some unsuspecting person, the Home for the Hopelessly Gullible will donate ten cents to itself. (If you wonder how the Home will know you are forwarding these messages all over creation, you're obviously thinking too much.) *************************************************** ACT NOW! DON'T DELAY! LIMITED TIME! NOT SOLD IN ANY STORE! *************************************************** ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 20:14:47 +0800 From: Harinder_GREWAL@MCD.gov.sg Subject: [none] Hi guys, Remember Keith offering those double Cds for sale? Well, I felt they were a little too expensive, since I know how much they cost, and told him so. His response is below. So, anyway, if you're interested in the CDs, I'll be happy to get them for you, at cost plus packaging and registered postage. I cant promise you the TNMC double-Cds but the others are widely available. harin odelay@singnet.com.sg on 15/03/99 19:45:03 To: Harinder GREWAL/MCD/SINGOV@SINGOV cc: Subject: Re: Harinder, I do not wish to sound offensive here. But I am just trying doing a business here. I am defintely not trying to trade with anyone a CD or 2. I don't think anyone can have a say in saying what price I decide to sell the CD for. I am not ashamed to say that I am out to make a profit. But I hope you put this in mind. It's not about marking up a CD by 50% or more. Who's going to pay for the postgae and handling prices? How about the admin costs? And this internet bill for sending tons and tons of emails across the globe? After deducting all expenses, I don't think I am wrong to make a profit of at least 10 bucks. I mean do you expect me send all these CDs across the globe and not making a profit while my actual intention is to do business? I know you stayed in Singapore. Look at HMV. They are marking up most CDs by 10 bucks. Are you going to say they are not supposed to do that? Furthermore, by selling a CD for US$30 is the normal rate that is going for in the States for 2CD. you could always check it up in the States. I mean if you still think I am ripping off your friends. I suggest that why don't you do them a kind deed and send the CDs to them? Handling almost 50 orders a day is not an easy task. I have better things to do, really. I don't mind if you wish to "dispose" me, so called. I don't think I am doing any wrong nor committing any offence. Anyway, take care and it's nice you email. Have a nice day. HOB would be called "tiny" or "intimate" venue, though it boasts it can house 1800 people because the floor under the stage is general admission area and standing room. I was a little late in line to arrive 30 minutes before the gates opened but could secure the fourth raw(by the end of the show, forwarded to the second). There was no opener though HOB advertised that Eagle-eye Cherry would appear in the local leaflet...But I knew he would be somewhere else to do his own show anyway. Sheryl wore gray pants, gray tanktop . She was in very good condition and looked very happy to see the audience's direct reaction. The setlist is as follows: 1. Maybe That's Something 2. My Favorite Mistake 3. A Change 4. Leaving Las Vegas 5. .Anything But Down 6. It Don't Hurt 7. Riverwide 8. If It Makes You Happy 9. Am I Getting Through 10. Redemption Day 11. Sweet Rosalyn 12. Members Only 13. All I Wanna Do 14. There Goes the Neighborhood (En Core1) 15. Strong Enough 16. Mississippi (En Core2) 17. The Difficult Kind 18. Everyday is a Winding Road It was 1hr and 50 minutes in total. I LOVED the whole performance and the audience's reaction except for forty-something big man who danced like mad and made his way to the first raw;-). The greatest moments are: It Don't Hurt (which I heard for the first time in live) was more than fabulous and at this point, everyone in the house rocked! The extended rendition of Am I Getting Through Part 2 and the rocking feel at the end of Riverwide were much better than I imagined. It was easily the best Sheryl concert I've ever seen and one of the best in my lifetime. Glad I made it to Las Vegas. Hi again all, I have read with interest what some of you have posted about taping Sheryl's concerts and taking pictures at them. Now am I misinformed? At any concert I went to I thought that this stuff was strictly forbidden. Does Sheryl allow taping or photography? I heard Dave Matthews Band allows taping, but that was the only one. I would probably be more into taking in my camera if allowed, I've got 11th row and a long lens. let me know. BTW icq me at 12066782. Wow! It's been months since I've written anything on here! How is everyone?? If you remember me! LOL! I haven't been reading in a week because I was away on spring break, but I caught subject lines and one of them was about the Camden show. I got my tickets! Well actually my friend got them for me because I was on my way to the airport when they went on sale and she said she got Row F in the orchestra section. Where is that? Good seats or not? I'm not sure what section. I think she said 104. Or 103. Also I have never been there before and from what I'm hearing it's a really really bad section of Phillie, and well actually, my friends are scaring me! We will have to stay overnight somewhere and I was told to not stay in Camden. Is anyone really familiar with the area?? Any suggestions to ease my mind would be greatly appreciated! I'll give out what I was told on how to make a good bootleg. In no particular order: 1. be near the soundboard system if possible, it's what makes a great boot. 2. get away from people who talk a lot and whatnots. 3. don't sing along to songs and blah blah, including clapping 4. might want to put some duct tape over the red recording light 5. try to get the recorder high in the air (not sure why, that's what I was told) 6. demagnetize your recorder to get a good results 7. use new tapes and take along extra copies 8. set the volume of recorder at a reasonable setting. not to high and not too soft There's a bunch of others, but from my experience of taping a show not too long ago, I was in the balcony right under the speakers. Yup yup, it came out ohk, soooo.. I'm not sure if this helped or not. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Katie ();) The mind is the best instrument to play. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Mar 1999 14:28:07 EST From: SCFANCLUB2@aol.com Subject: Re: Sheryl at House of Blues Thanks for the review Takuji! Sounds like a great show. This is what Billboard had to say about it this morning: Las Vegas Crowd Craves Crow Sheryl Crow launched her North American tour Saturday night before an ecstatic crowd at the new House of Blues in Las Vegas. Backed by a six-piece band that included a violinist and cello player, the A&M/Interscope artist flawlessly dished out almost two hours' worth of tunes, including tracks from her latest Grammy-winning set "The Globe Sessions." Despite the unusually high ticket cost ($75-$150), fans packed into the Venue (capacity 1,700) and sang along to the songs. Highlights of the show included newer material like "There Goes The Neighborhood" and the two-part "Am I Getting Through," as well as older, more popular cuts like "If It Makes You Happy" and closing number "Everyday Is A Winding Road." Crow also played the Vegas card by making several references to gambling, talking about her own wagers on the Evander Holyfield-Lennox Lewis fight, and playing her debut hit, "Leaving Las Vegas." -- Mike Prevatt, Las Vegas ------------------------------ End of sheryl-crew-digest V2 #39 ********************************
