Tell me about it! Cowboy Take Me Away was written by Martie (fiddle) for her sister Emily (banjo) when she met her husband, isn't that sweet? She just wanted her sister to be happy. There is just no way I'd spend that much on a guitar. I wish she'd done something in the $700 range; that would be a quality guitar, but affordable. Sheryl's Height - From the pics I've seen, I would agree that she's around 5'2 or 5'3. (Most rock stars are shorter than you would expect.) My week with Sheryl - would be spent doing ordinary type stuff. I"d love to go shopping with her, do lunch at the mall, eat pizza and watch videos, etc. I want to see what she does and what she's like away from the glamorous rock life. Sheryl's hair - I definately prefer her hair short. She looked great at the Grammys and on the cover of Guitar World Acoustic. She seems so much happier lately, doesn't she? In old long-hair pics, she always seemed sad, even if she was smiling. ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1999 12:31:19 EST From: Mauseee@aol.com Subject: [sheryl-crew] review from a friend Hey crew, I made a friend at the front row of the Central Park concert; he is a HUGE Eric Clapton fan and was just there to see him actually, but he really liked what he saw in Sheryl and has been a fan of hers ever since. He is a writer for the Eric Clapton fan club news letter and I just thought I would pass on his article. Ya'll are welcome to add suggestions, it hasn't been published yet... Here it is: Wednesday Night Music Club: Sheryl Crow & Friends in Central Park, September 14, 1999 Last June, I saw Sheryl Crow open for the Rolling Stones at their highly-publicized gig at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. After her own highly-charged set, she sat on the edge of her balcony seat to revel in the Stones’ rare small-venue appearance, and then reappeared on stage to join Mick for a duet on "Honky Tonk Women." I thought to myself, never mind the pop image from her first album, this girl has guts, and talent, too! Three weeks later, there she was again at Madison Square Garden, center stage in what TE rightly called "one of the champagne moments": Clapton’s first performance of "Little Wing" in twenty-five years. So when it was announced that Eric would be a "special guest" at Sheryl’s Central Park in Blue, I had high expectations for the event. It was a glorious day in Central Park and the ticketholders waited outside hours before the gates opened in hopes of securing a prime spot. Among the Clapton fans, there was a lot of anticipation about what Eric and Sheryl would perform and whether it would be different from the MSG Crossroads Centre Benefit. If the rehearsals were any indication, we knew that we would be in for a real treat. The afternoon before, Eric had joined Sheryl’s band for a searing "Little Wing," one that, to my mind, surpassed the intensity of the MSG version. Sheryl also rehearsed extensively, with and without her guests, and seemed appropriately jittery about her prime-time, live television appearance. Whatever nervousness Sheryl showed in rehearsal, under the lights, all traces of tentativeness were replaced by energy and good humor. Sheryl took the stage as if she’d diligently studied entrances under the tutelage of Mick Jagger during the Stones tour. Any concerns I had that the anticipation of hearing Eric play "Little Wing" would prevent me from concentrating on Sheryl’s set were quashed by the intensity of her performance. At one point, she implored the audience to be patient, that the guests would come later. No one needed the admonishment. Not only was Sheryl pleasing her own fans, she had also won over the hearts of all those who stood in line all day to hear her guests perform. Sheryl began her set with a trio of rockers: "A Change," "Anything But Down," and "Can’t Cry Anymore." More than ever before, I recognized that Sheryl’s rich and unique sound complements and updates her rock influences. It appears that she finds inspiration in classics like the Stones’ Let it Bleed and Exile on Main Street, the Dominos’ Layla & other Assorted Love Songs, and Dylan’s Nashville Skyline. When I first thought of this, I was concerned that I was perhaps projecting my own favorites onto her, but the evidence shows otherwise. Sheryl has been known to cover "Happy" and the end of "Can’t Cry Anymore" is pure "Tumbling Dice." She has covered the Dominos’ "Keep on Growing" and has duetted with Eric on "Little Wing." Her impassioned vocals often remind me of Clapton’s urgent pleas on "I Looked Away" and "Anyday." She has often pointed to Bob Dylan as a songwriting influence and regularly performs "Mississippi," which is on her latest album, The Globe Sessions. Throughout the evening, Sheryl exuded spirit and enthusiasm. "Everyday is a Winding Road," "My Favorite Mistake," and "Leaving Las Vegas" were particularly strong. The show dragged a bit with commercial breaks, and also with Chrissie Hynde and Stevie Nicks, but when Keith Richards joined Sheryl for "Happy" and Chuck Berry’s "Sweet Little Rock and Roller," the energy returned to its peak level. Keith seemed thrilled to be back on stage again and, quite rightly pointed out, "It’s great to be here. It’s great to be anywhere. This one’s ‘Happy.’" The playing was pretty average, but the posturing — vintage Keith! In rehearsal, Eric joined Sheryl for several takes of "The Difficult Kind," a song Sheryl included in her set at MSG. At the Garden, Eric had stayed very much in the background, but at the rehearsal for Central Park, he played aggressive slide fills and added much to Sheryl’s arrangement. Sadly, for the broadcast, Sarah McLachlan replaced Eric on "The Difficult Kind." I would certainly be curious to know why that decision was made. Perhaps it was because McLachlan’s "Angel" was before the FOX broadcast began, and they needed to include her on something. Whatever the cause, it was a loss. After "The Difficult Kind," Eric joined Sheryl on stage. Clapton’s reception was much more ecstatic than any other guest’s. Even the security guards and police officers turned around to watch the guitar virtuoso tear into "White Room." I remember reading that it was Eric’s performance of "White Room" at Live Aid that gave his career a much needed boost in 1985. Times have changed since then, but the spectacle of Eric soloing on "White Room" apparently hasn’t lost any of its luster. Then came the moment we had all been waiting for: "Little Wing." I hate to admit it, but the rehearsal version may have actually topped the performance version, but it was a delight, nonetheless. Unfortunately, they played "White Room" for the TV audience and played "Little Wing" during a commercial break and, for that reason, cut it short. Sacrilege! For the obligatory star-studded encore, the choice was "Tombstone Blues." Eric, who really is a no-nonsense guy, didn’t look particularly pleased to be on playing this one, and didn’t add much. It was amusing, however, to watch comedian and host Bill Murray shame Eric into taking the microphone for a brief interval. And that was that. We had heard Eric’s second live performance of "Little Wing" in a quarter century. I had known that "Little Wing" was going to be worth the wait, but what surprised me was just how much I enjoyed the rest of Sheryl’s set. Like the fan next to me who knew all of the words and held up a sign that read "SHERYL ROCKS," I, too was under her spell. I’ve never been one for jumping on bandwagons. I haven’t yet taken to Puff Daddy and probably never will. Back in 1996, when Eric joined Sheryl on stage in Modena for Pavarotti and Friends, I wasn’t sure what to make of her. But this year, I have been absolutely blown away by everything she has done. From MSG on June 30th to "Central Park in Blue," Sheryl has not only dazzled on her own, but has also been an excellent collaborator with Eric. She’s one of a kind and has extraordinary taste in mentors. We can only hope for more Sheryl & Eric performances to come. And maybe someday she’ll have better luck at convincing him to do "Keep on Growing," "I Looked Away," and "Anyday" than I have! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1999 15:14:59 -0500 From: "Christina Clark" Subject: Re: [sheryl-crew] Off: Dixie Chicks Also Brooke, check out Heartbreak Town, it is so beautiful, and Let >Him Fly...ahh I love this cd so much I can't even tell you! > >Christina >Christina Hey Crew, don't mind me, I must have been stoned when I wrote my name twice, either that or I subconsciously love my name so much that once would not suffice. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Nov 1999 12:13:37 -0800 (PST) From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Laurence=20Cazes?= Subject: [sheryl-crew] question about a song hiya crew! i've got a question, i recently got the cd of sheryl's performance in madison,WI ( april 23rd 99 ) and sheryl's singing something unknown ( or at least i don't know it... ) right after my fave mistake... anyone who was at the concert, or who's got the recording knows that ( short ) song ??? it lasts about 1 min 30 i think... has she done in other towns? i was going shopping yesterday, and guess what i found!!!! pants that looked like sheryl's leather pants !!!! so i bought them!
