But she says, ultimately, it was corporate sponsorship that led to the Central Park gig, as opposed to any deep-seated desire to play the setting that has seen memorable concerts by Garth Brooks, Diana Ross and Paul Simon.  "Actually, American Express approached me about doing this, and I never thought I'd actually get the opportunity," says the casually dressed and makeup-free Crow, seated in the Amphitheatre's outdoor, backstage lounge area.  "It's a huge, huge undertaking, and I'm extremely grateful I'm getting to do it. It's just such a rare opportunity to actually play for that many people and have it be free. And the money that's made from advertisements is going to the Pediatric AIDS Organization. It's just a really cool, cool happening."  In addition to the Central Park concert, Crow is producing some tracks on friend-and-mentor Stevie Nicks' upcoming solo album, under a strict timetable.  "I'll go into the studio and work for the two weeks and then I'll get back on the road," explains Crow. "So it's been frustrating for the two of us, 'cause we really want to go in and just, like, get it going. But when we are together, it's a blast, and it's really effortless. We both have a really great understanding of what we're doing, and what we want it to sound like and feel like. And we're extremely good friends."  The Southern-born Crow, who met Nicks at a Grammys party a few years ago, says she actually grew up in Missouri wanting to look like the former Fleetwood Mac frontwoman.  "I didn't wear the boots," she insists. "I was from Missouri, and there would have been no boots like that to be found. But I did have my hair cut in a long shag like hers."  Crow -- composed but with a keen sense of humour both offstage and on -- seems to be getting used to the fact that her own success has led to her becoming friends with some of her music heroes.  They include Eric Clapton, whom she briefly dated and who is rumoured to be the subject of her most-recent hit, My Favourite Mistake (she will say only that the song is a composite of several relationships), and Bob Dylan, who provided Crow with a discarded track from his Time Out Of Mind album called Mississippi for The Globe Sessions.  "It's a big surprise to me that we're friends," admits Crow of Dylan. "It's a big surprise to me that he even knows who I am -- every day I'm surprised by that. My main concern was that I hoped that he liked it (her version of Mississippi). And he liked it!"  To add to her ever-growing profile, the pixie-like and attractive Crow, who previously turned down roles in Get Shorty and Jerry Maguire, is also making her movie debut soon. She appears as a junkie in the upcoming The Minus Man, from first-time director Hampton Fancher, who penned Blade Runner.  "Dwight Yoakam kept pestering me until I finally gave in," she explains. "He was in the film and he loved the script and the cast was really great and the director and writer. Everything kind of just worked. It was only three days of shooting for me, so I thought, 'Well, it's a good opportunity to explore that part of creativity and self-expression.' "  Crow has yet to see the movie, shot a year ago outside of L.A. and slated for U.S. release on Sept. 10. But since the film stars Crow's real-life, slightly younger boyfriend Owen Wilson, who co-wrote the indie hits Bottle Rocket and Rushmore (with Wes Anderson) and recently starred in the studio stinker The Haunting, she'll make the effort.  "My boyfriend stars in it so I will try to sit down and see it," says Crow, who doesn't hesitate to talk up Rushmore when I mention that the hilarious film was one of my favourites.  "He's a great writer," she says of Wilson. "That was a great movie. It's really, for me, it's re-affirming that people are writing movies that don't revolve around violence and foul language and sex and nudity, and all the things that we're so used to seeing."  Crow adds that Wilson has been shooting Shanghai Noon in Calgary this summer and hasn't made it out yet to Lilith.  "He's been out a few times, but not on this tour," she says. "He's seen me play a lot. And he loves it. It's funny because he's only ever been to two rock concerts and one of them was mine. It's just so completely different from what he does, so it's fun. He doesn't get wrapped up in it, he doesn't really care so much about it, but it's just something he enjoys."  On the other hand, Crow -- an exciting live performer who blew most of the other Lilith participants in Toronto off the stage last weekend -- says video shoots more than live performing prepared her for a movie set.  Still she's not anxious to repeat the experience real soon unless a great script comes along.  "I enjoyed it. It didn't, for me, give me any feeling of spontaneous, self-expression, because there are so many factors in it that you're thinking about. I think when you're on stage and you're playing a song, you're not really thinking about which way you're supposed to be looking or where the light is."  Other upcoming work for Crow includes travelling to Japan, and beginning her follow-up album to The Globe Sessions, which she doesn't expect to be out until September 2000.  Meanwhile, Crow isn't lamenting the loss of Lilith Fair next summer after McLachlan decided to wrap it up this year.  "I think it's really smart, because I think the shelf life of these things already is pretty short," she says. "And I think something else will come along."  Just don't expect Crow to start her own festival.  "I'm not much of a businesswoman, I've got to be honest," she says. "I like to show up and play, that's what I like to do."  And she does it so well. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The SHERYL CROW File  Born: Feb. 11, 1962, Kennett, Missouri  Early life: The daughter of amateur musicians, she received a degree in classical piano at University of Missouri and taught music at a St. Louis elementary school.  Big Break: Moved to L.A., got gig as a back-up singer for Michael Jackson and worked with Don Henley, George Harrison, Joe Cocker, Stevie Wonder and Rod Stewart before getting her own record deal in 1991.  Discography: Tuesday Night Music Club (1993), Sheryl Crow (1996), The Globe Sessions (1998).  Kudos: Has sold 13 million albums and won five Grammys. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 14:51:18 -0400 From: "F. Then whatever damage it would do to her "street cred" was done a long time ago, considering the fact that the track appeared on 3 different UK singles, a French single, and a US promo disc, all between 1993 and 1994. So it was released, extensively, and yet her "street cred", whatever that may be, seems unaffected.
