Sheryl's was #15 (below) It's a pretty good site to keep up with the event! Mike :-) Woodstock '99 Report #15: Sheryl Crow Act Short On Theatrics, Long On Emotion Singer/songwriter's set recalled late blues-rocker Janis Joplin's original Woodstock performance. Contributing Editor Frank Tortorici reports: ROME, N.Y. — Sheryl Crow was one Woodstock '99 performer who would have fit right in at Woodstock '69. Crow, whose voice alternated between a sexy growl and sultry purr for much of the set, delivered plenty of raw emotion — not unlike that of the late blues-rock belter Janis Joplin, who played the original Woodstock. Backed by six musicians during her Friday afternoon set, the acoustic guitar-wielding Crow eschewed theatrics. Instead, she electrified the more than 200,000 people in the crowd by baring her emotions in song. Though her type of rock differs greatly from that of such raucous bands as Korn and Limp Bizkit, Crow managed to impress fans of all ages. "She put everything into it," 19-year-old Michelle Frye of nearby Illiom, N.Y., said. "She's one of the only acts that fits in with the [Woodstock] spirit. Not like DMX or Ice Cube." "We're here to experience everything," her 47-year-old mother, Teresa Frye, said. "But Sheryl crosses generations." Crow's expressive hazel eyes, more noticeable than ever because of her new short haircut, were ablaze when she sang the line "Jesus loves me I know" during "Am I Getting Through?," from her latest album, the Grammy Award-winning The Globe Sessions. A few guys in the audience kept screaming at Crow to "show off your t--s." The singer/songwriter, dressed in a tight, white tank top and orange pants trimmed with western-style fringe, teased them a few times by making motions indicating she would lift her shirt. But she seemed to grow tired of their yelling and said, "You'd have to pay way more than you paid to get in to see my t--s." During "Everyday Is a Winding Road," Crow tried to enliven her set by dancing around without her guitar. She even squatted at the front of the stage with her arms at her side and gave the audience a menacing glare. That was as close to rowdy as the performance got, though Crow was cheered when she covered Guns n' Roses' "Sweet Child o' Mine." "I'm sure you can relate," she said, invoking the sex-and-drugs party attitude of mischievous Axl Rose's wild band. Meanwhile a line of women near the front of the stage allowed males in the crowd to fondle their naked breasts. "I like a good beer buzz early in the morning," Crow crooned in "All I Wanna Do," the big hit from her breakthrough album Tuesday Night Music Club. She closed the set by playing bass during a highly funky "There Goes the Neighborhood," a single from her latest LP. "I dropped acid on a Saturday night just to see what the fuss was about," Crow cooed during the track. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 11:19:13 EDT From: "Pierre David" Subject: Woodstock pic and request Hiya Heres a sheryl i found while surfin the net, of her performance @ Woodstock http://www.canoe.ca/JamPhotoGallery/woodstock11.jpg Also, unfortunately because of complications, i was unable to see her supposed amazing performance. THe first one, she said, they watched the WS '69 documentary before hand, and were all decked out in 60's garb as she put it, then this year they rolled in and...."it's just really different" that's what she said. I loved what she was wearing, something about those tan pants with the feathers, I don't know, they were pretty cool. I went to bed when TGTN came on, now I am pissed cause they showed the other stuff, oh well. A funny part in the interview was when she dropped her water and said "oops, dropped my water, she was giggling and the camera bent down with her when she picked it up. In total she seemed like she was having a good time, she appeared to be very happy. Another thing I want to say is how much do I hate Korn? I never disliked them before but after seeing their interview they are just an obnoxious bunch of men. During their interview you could hear Sheryl in the background singing SCOM, and Bill W asked them something along the lines of how they were enjoying WS, then one guy said "Well I can hear someone playing GNR" sarcastically, and BW said "That's Sheryl Crow!" And they went "oh" not sounding very interested at all, then they said something like "We can hear it just fine from way over here" being quite mean and there was a moment of silence of BW part, I think he was in shock that they were being so mean on TV, he didn't know what to say, then he changed the subject. But it just got worse from there (not talking about Sheryl though). Christina P.S MMM played TGTN on heavy rotation, but that was the first time I had seen it on MM. >Anybody catch the brief Interview w/ Sheryl on Much Music? They asked her >some general questions like her woodstock memories, and some other questions. >Sheryl looked really comfortable smiling and stuff..Lol sorry if i dont >remeber i was paying more attention to like her clothes and stuff than the >interview..SORRY heh > >Then they showed a video for TGTN..Someone said it's been on much before >right? Because at first i was like whoa they made a video? It was weird but i >liked it kinda reminded me of Madonna's ray of light video a little..except >better because it was Sheryl ;P Anyways it wasn't anything that hasn't been >done before in videos, but still worth checking out. > >Then after that they showed a woodstock 94 flashback interview ;) So double >sheryl plus some clips of her perfoming rbr and llv, She was wearing a Manson >sucks shirt, and of course her hair was longer..She wasn't wearing any make >up and she looked more tan..It was interesting to see Sheryl today and her 5 >years ago..It was just hard to imagine it was 5 years already..Anyhow i feel >like i didnt explain this well at all can anybody help me out? > ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 15:42:07 -0400 From: "Christina Clark" Subject: Sheryl and Korn I can't believe on MTV Sheryl was talking about being excited to see Korn, when they dissed her on TV during her set! Obviously she didn't know about that, but I feel bad for her, being on one station saying that, and them being on another, dissing her! Excuse me, I 'd had problems to send this e-mail, here it goes: - ------------------------ HI FRIENDS!!! Who has got Sheryl videos??? Unfortunately I haven't Sheryl videos; I have only the video I recorded from TV "Live From London" (I like it very much!). I would like to have Sheryl video clips, i.e.: IIMYH, ACWDYG, Strong Enough, TGTN, etc, in a good image quality and also I would like to have some Sheryl live concert. I don't know if that is possible. I'm from Chile, and here almost never the SC videos are played. Sorry, I have not much to trade, I have only: The 3 almbums, each one on CD and cassette. The IIMYH single CD. The video live from London, recorded from TV (Hbo channel) in mono sound. The bootlegs CD "B-Sides", that with 18 songs. Three audio tapes with songs recorded from live and radio performs, and from video (a friend made me these tapes) THANK YOU VERY MUCH. - --------------------- P.S.: Who recorded Sheryl perform in Woodstock 99? I can't see it in Chile yesterday. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jul 1999 22:04:40 -0400 From: "Christina Clark" Subject: Sheryl interview I was feeling very nice today and in a Sheryl mood so I thought I would do something nice for the crew. So I wrote out the Sheryl Much Music Woodstock interview for everyone! Sheryl MM Woodstock Interview Interviewed by MuchMusic's Juliette Powell and MusiquePlus' I don't know lol! - -clip ABD performance- MM-We're live backstage at Woodstock '99 with Sheryl Crow, Sheryl, you were there in '94, you are back in '99, it must give you an incredible sense of perspective to see how much you've grown, not just as your career goes but as a person as well. SC-Well, we were kinda laughing about it on the way in cause it seems like 20 years ago we were here. And the feel of this one is quite different, when we rolled in the first time we were really wet behind the ears and we were on a tour bus and watching the original uh, Woodstock and we were watching Flashing in the 60's (? I couldn't really make it out), were were kinda garbed out in uh, all this 60's paraphenalia, and this time I'm kinda rolling in and I'm...Ya whatever *laughs* so it's a little different of an attitude *laughs*. MM- but it seems to me that everybody feels that way that was there in '94, that everything seems to be diluted. SC- Well, it's no gonna be the same, I mean obviously the name Woodstock holds so much, uh, well so much of a legacy, and it's just never gonna be that again, it'll never be like the 60's was and '94 was also kinda honoring that by being the 25th, now it's becoming sort of, more of, not an annual tradition but something certainly that we can count on happening. MP-like the Olympics of music SC- Ya, exactly. MP-What's your best memory of '94? SC-Um, my best memory, to be honest, it's really funny, my bus driver was in the original commune, that Easy Rider was about MP- WOW! SC- and he was telling us about his daughter wanting to go to Woodstock, she was 16 at the time and he said we can't say no cause we were at the original Woodstock. And sure enough I'm on stage playing and it's Friday night and it's dark and there are 300,000 people out there, in the mud, and I look over and this young girl is standing up in front of this huge stack (?) and it was Mary his daughter, and so that's what I remember most about it, just looking over and seeing her, with all these CNN cameras and stuff on her. And it was just a fun WS memory. I knew Bernie, my bus driver, was probably out there like just tearing his hair out. MP-Do you think it's become a less scary thing, or a less rebel thing to do to come to WS? SC-Uh, I don't know if it's really very..very rebel, although it's definately different this year, there's a lot of rap metal on it so, and they really represent, I think, what is new in Rock n'Roll, so, seeing that kinda crowd... *thump* *looks down* smiling and giggling "Sorry, I dropped my water" camera follows her down to pick it up. MM-*giggling* That's ok, just one last question before you go, cause I know you've got to go. I know that you spent many years on the road touring, moving from hotel to apartment. I heard that recently you just bought a house. Do you feel that you've finally put down some roots and why was that necessary? SC-Um, well, I bought a house for a number of reasons, I needed a backyard for my dog and, it's just, I just was at a certain point in my life, I felt like I needed something that felt more stable than a hotel room. I would come home and be in a rented house or apartment and feel like it was just more comfortable being on the road. And now I am taking a year off, I've bought some furniture, hung a few pictures and I'm starting to feel like I have a home base and I think that is important. MM-What's that say about you? SC-It means I am growing up, I'm becoming an adult *smiles*, as much as I don't want to, I'm becoming an adult ladies ha ha ha! MM-Will that change your Rock n' Roll attitude? SC-NEVA!! MM-NEVER! SC-( Arm up in the air) NEVA!! MM-You go girl! hope you enjoyed it, it was quite a good interview, it was pretty funny at times, like the water dropping incident, it was so cute the way she looked down, her eyes just kinda dropped and she giggled.
