I just heard on the news today that our favorite retail giant has banned another cd. Seems like some guy bought his son A Godsmack Cd (not to familiar w/ them, I know they play alt rock), noticed some "evil" pictures and "Bad" lyrics and now our favorite store decided that was against their Family values policy to sell it there, and it is being pulled at every Wal Mart in America now. I guess it's ok to sell hunting rifles to kids but god forbid they get there hands on a cd with bad words! Like we need stores like Wal mart telling us what's good for us...Of course I became aware of this stupid policy back w/ the Sheryl controversy, but I think that the fact they need to censor things for us now makes me even more ill. What's next? Not selling movies rated R??? p.s. I gotta say this bickering today has been really, really annoying...So please stop it ok? We're hear because we want to discuss Sheryl not call see who can rub it in more (I got to interview her you didn't nahah) or who's the better fan. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 06:20:47 +0100 From: "Tim Wheatley" Subject: Re: It's Sheryl's body Please stop filling my mail box with this, it's not what i'm on the list for, okay you've made your point to him, enough is enough. An amazingly talented human of course!! But human nonetheless. I'm not looking for an argument, just express what I think. When I heard talk of the pix on the list, i thought they couldnt be that bad, that knowing Sheryl, they would have to be tastefully done. But when I saw them myself, esp the one in colour, I was very disappointed. Its not a good pix, like so many have mentioned, and I dont think its flattering either, unlike the black and white one, which is nice. It may be the 90s, but double standards still prevail. When women resort to such actions, there are repercussions, primarily on their credibility. Sheryl has worked damn hard to get where she is, to rank among the best and most credible musicians around today. Without hype. Yeah, shes had her share of controversy, but she never needed hype to sell albums or gain recognition. I'm not saying that this is what she has done here, I'm sure its not. But the fact that she did this, when sales of TGS are not living up to those of TNMC and SC, will surely lead some people to speculate as to the reason behind her doing it. Frankly, I would not blame detractors too much if they choose to use this to discredit her as a musician. It wouldnt be valid (IMHO), but they'll look for any opportunity, and lets face it, many of us would say the same of musicians (I use the term loosely) we dont like who did the same, and say they sold out or whatever... As someone else mentioned, I cant see Sarah McLachlan, Bob Dylan, or whoever agreeing to this. But then, not too long ago, I'd have said the same thing of Sheryl. Who knows, eh? Any guesses as to why it was a British mag? :) On another note - is anything happening with the T-shirt? harin ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 07:47:07 +0100 From: "Sam" Subject: CHRIS AND MICHAEL which one of you 'won' there??? cos well either way you both made yourself look like little idiots (i dont want to become personally involved in this but....) you have a petty little arguement using THIS LIST, I do not take kindly to having to readlike 15 out of 30 e-mails in my inbox this morning before i have to go to school..... the arguement was funny, just cos you remind me of two silly bickering kids, arguements like that never get won, you both lose you you both look stupid! Ok, the arguing on-list was not necessary, and I know we sometimes get off-topic, but frankly, I'd rather have a lot of irrelevant mail than have list mails monitored. Imagine the work, Lisa.... Discussion also becomes rather stunted, and you'll get several messages saying exactly the same thing, but senders dont know that, cos other's posts will not have been posted until u have a chance to let them through. Then depending on how frequently you let mail through, discussion will be limited. It'd become rather boring, frankly. Sure off-topics can be annoying, and I know that I've contributed to them too, but its so much easier for all of us to just delete the mails we dont wanna read than have them censored for us. That is the lesser of two evils, IMO. harin owner-sheryl-crew@smoe.org on 27/05/99 14:27:47 Please respond to sheryl-crew@smoe.org @ SMTP To: sheryl-crew@smoe.org @ SMTP cc: Subject: Re: It's Sheryl's body In a message dated 5/26/99 10:23:34 PM Pacific Daylight Time, timwh@lineone.net writes: << Please stop filling my mail box with this, it's not what i'm on the list for, okay you've made your point to him, enough is enough. >> My sentiments exactly.
