O' Connor" Subject: Polygram Ok, I've got the article, from September 1998. I'll go through what I can work out from it because it's a little bit businessy at times. Polygram have always been A&M's parent company but the article says that A&M had just closed down as a standalone operation 29 years after it opened its first UK office. A&M still exists as a brand but not an organisation, in other words, the A&M symbol is on releases but distribution and marketing is handled by Polydor and Mercury which are also in the Polygram 'family'. What they seem to be worried about is that the music industry is being taken over by corporate lawyers and businessmen who don't care about the music, but only about making money. (Apologies to any corporate lawyers or businessmen/women, but its their view not mine.) There are pics of Sheryl, Sting and Bryan Adams and there's a bit of a comment from Scooter Weintraub - Sheryl's manager- and from Sting's manager as well, saying the same about money being a big factor. I think the dissolution of A&M mentioned above is talking about the UK branch but there's more. It says that there was a take-over of Polygram by Seagram for $10.6 billion which is (I quote): "a deal that may yet threaten the integrity of A&M's US arm, arguably more entrenched with 60 artists on the books as opposed to UK A&M's 15." (Including the aforementioned presumably as well as Mover, Bluetones and Del Amitri.) It finishes off with Osman Eralp, former MD of A&M Records, saying how he reckons that the industry is going to revert back to small independents to avoid this bad relationship between artist and record company employee (the latter having little or no love for the music and less knowledge about it.) Of course he may be a teensy bit biased and he was getting ready to set up an independent. Bear in mind this was on the shelves early August 1998 so probably written mid-July '98. Incidentally, the October 1998 issue had a good interview with Sheryl in Memphis and some quite good pictures along with it. The first paragraph gave me a certain type of longing to be a Q reporter. Then the April 1998 issue has a review of a concert of hers in Stuttgart Liederhalle on February 10, 1999 and also a bit about Liz Phair for those interested. I think there may be a further back review of a concert too but I'm not sure which one. There was also a short page-long interview with her in FHM about 6 months ago but I didn't bother buying it because it's not my type of mag any more than Maxim. I'll see about getting July's Maxim though when it comes out and arrange something then if you like Christina. There is a Q website at www.qonline.co.uk and although it may not have the interview, it should have the concert review and album reviews for TGS and perhaps SC and TNMC as well. It is possible to get back issues of Q magazine and I highly recommend the interview in the October 1998 magazine. I always end up writing far too much!! It's from today. (5/24/99) There's also a real video clip of her talking about doing the Lilith Fair. They wrote she might perform the song in the third to last lilith fair and it will be on the Big Daddy soundtrack.
