Jewel's an original talent and personality (with more in common with Dylan and Ella Fitzgerald than Rickie Lee). Same with Sheryl -- it's never sounded like anyone else to me (the guitar riffs and some lyrics -- the Nana Song for example -- recall other artists like the Stones, the Beatles and Dylan, but that's just how rock music regenerates). I think it depends on how well you know an artist's music -- if you don't know them very well, then there's a tendency to make associations with other music that you're more familiar with; once you get to know Jewel, or Sheryl or Rickie Lee or other people's music really well -- then they sound just like who they are, individual women with their own unique talents. BTW, when I was in Austin recently for the SXSW conference, on a bill with Beth Orton (a most beautiful voice, her new CD Central Reservation is so cool, too), anyway, the act onstage at Antone's before Beth Orton was Chuck E. Weiss -- the Chuck E. who inspired the Rickie Lee Jones lyric, Chuck E.'s in Love. Then she disappeared in order to record "Sheryl Crow" so by the time that album came out and she was in the spotlight again, it had grown out. She had it short when she went to Bosnia, on the Grammy Awards in 1996, MTV Music Awards (1995), etc. Hope that helps. Re: Sheryl's fan club...A&M doesn't have much to do with it in terms of handling things. It's a company called "Fan Asylum" that takes care of the dirty work. But who knows who's to blame in this case. The birthday book has now become a yearly SC mailing list tradition and so far we've been 2 for 2 in getting the book personally into Sheryl's hands. We first made one last year with letters from mailing list members wishing Sheryl a happy birthday, etc., and I personally gave it to her when she played in Las Vegas on Valentine's Day (Sheryl's b-day is Feb. 11 for those who don't know). Then we put another one together this year, and by the pictures, I must say, it turned out even better than last year's! Bravo to Jessica (who put it together and personally gave it to Sheryl when she played in Holland) and everyone else who contributed to the book. So I definitely think we should do a Birthday Book III, let's just hope Sheryl will be touring around then. =) Also, re: August 7 and 8th shows in New Jersey...Lilith Fair. And as Mike mentioned, I will be going out of town and he'll be handling the adminstrative duties until I get back. I'll be leaving on Thursday and probably will be gone for about 1-2 weeks. I'll still have e-mail access and will be reading the Crew mail, but won't be able to check it very often, so if you need help with something (list-related), please e-mail Mike, ducksoup@spectra.net Thanks, Lisa ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 May 1999 17:46:50 PDT From: domf@excite.com Subject: My Musical Experience Hi Crew, This may sound strange, but it is actually fun. Plessinger" Subject: Stevie Nicks and Camden Show The last I heard Stevie's record titled "Trouble in Shangri-La " is scheduled for release in October. Sheryl is producing the entire thing (they have three songs done already and are going into the studio this month to try and finish it) Two of the songs are from the legendary recording of "Buckingham Nicks" AND Lindsey Buckingham is playing guitar on the record. I don't know what song though. I would imagine something from Buckingham Nicks. Sheryl is producing, writing, singing, and playing on the record. These are just things I've heard in the past few months. The part about Buckingham Nicks, Lindsey, and producing I know are definitely true because it pretty much came out of the horses mouth. I don't know how many of you are Stevie fans, but I get most of my info from The Nicks Fix (http://nicksfix.com) and there are a lot of things about Sheryl on the site. John just added two pictures of Stevie and Sheryl from the March 30th show of Sheryl's. You can see the pics by the link on the main page. I went to the Camden show too! It was so great! Dave and Rachelle, did you guys get my emails?? I couldn't find you at the show :( I gave you my seat numbers, I wasn't sure what else to do because I didn't hear back from you. But all in all Sheryl rocked the house down! I had seen her a few times before and I can honestly say I have never seen her sounding better, or happier. She seemed to be having the time of her life up there. I have a question. What did she say when she was talking right before "It Don't Hurt" and the crowd just started dying laughing. It was about the things you do to get over someone and then afterwards she said that she had never done that before. I missed that! Also, what were the two covers songs her and Semisonic did at the end? And who originally sang them? At the end of "It Don't Hurt" this guy behind me commented that Lindsey Buckingham would play the guitar really well on that song. I thought that was cool. Talk to everyone later! Man I am still on some high from Thursday night :) I can't wait until Lilith and Woodstock!
