EW Online is there as rock's queen of the road rolls through New York City on her way to a summer of nonstop touring by Mark Bautz Are you strong enough to be her... fan? The hardest working woman in pop music, Sheryl Crow, has signed to do 38 shows at this summer's Lilith Fair (beginning July 8 in Vancouver), to tour Europe in June with the Rolling Stones, and to sing at the three-day Woodstock festival in Rome, New York, July 23-25. What's more, the singer is producing Stevie Nicks' upcoming solo record, performing at numerous special events (such as Friday's Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis) and, oh yeah, she's just wrapping up a three-month-long national headlining tour. ''I've never seen anything like it,'' says one music industry vet close to Crow. ''She rolls out of bed in the morning, does interviews and plays at radio stations all day, then does her sound check and performs an energetic two-hour show -- day after day.'' At three sold-out concerts earlier this week in her adopted hometown of New York City, the hard-working singer took the stage to preview the set fans can expect to see at her upcoming summer shows. From the crunching electric guitars of the opener, ''Maybe That's Something,'' through her entire set, it became clear that the denim-clad folkie who burst onto the scene in 1993 with ''All I Wanna Do'' is now a full-blown rocker. Adopting a spread-legged guitar-strumming pose that Courtney Love could envy, Crow -- in form-fitting jeans and a shoulder-baring top -- belted out her characteristically dark lyrics about tenuous love. Behind her, a triptych of video screens flashed images of '50s-style exotic dancers, which alternated with psychedelic color patterns. The video show continued throughout the 19-song set, and Crow vamped along, striking choreographed poses that seemed to come straight from her latest MTV videos. White-hot lights more typical of a Kiss concert blinded the audience during ''Am I Getting Through (Part I & II),'' leaving billowing smoke as the only rock-show effect not in evidence. Yet at strategic points, Crow wisely slowed things down. She introduced the hit ''A Change,'' for example, as a song about ''what you do when you've been dumped: cry, hate yourself, hate him -- cut your hair!'' The audience roared as she ran a hand through her newly cropped do. As Crow shifted from bass to electric guitar to harmonica to piano, one couldn't help thinking that she has become arguably the best mainstream singer-songwriter active now. After all, which other performer with such a relatively short career can boast so many tunes that are both lyrically and musically strong (''My Favorite Mistake,'' ''Everyday Is a Winding Road,'' and ''Leaving Las Vegas,'' to name just three)? Crow's voice, which some have called delicate, proved powerful enough to prevail over her very loud (and exceedingly tight) band. And her sense of pacing (ballads smartly mixed with uptempo rockers) and arranging (cello and violin deepening the texture of many songs) were faultless. Even her banter was top-notch. When an audience member tossed a joint onto the stage at her feet, Crow joked, ''That's how bands used to get paid in the '70s.'' And when she urged fans who were standing in the aisles to ''shake their asses'' during ''Members Only'' (she turned her back to the crowd and demonstrated how), most everyone obliged. It was all they wanted to do. However, I have to agree with Stephanie that It was dissapointing that the set was identicle to Tuesday nights. It sounded as though she was reading her lines. But who cares, its SHERYL right? She has not yet lived up to her potential I'll bet on that. She was great. I can't wait for her next CD. So now I am reading the digest regularly(at work, ssshhhh) Quick-Does anyone know where I can get some Sheryl art??? The song "What is Life?" is indeed a George Harrison song. It is also a staple of Semisonic's set list (along with Prince's "Erotic City"). ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 May 1999 09:55:41 -0400 (EDT) From: "Mason T. Weinrich" Subject: Orpheum 5/5 Review Hi folks - Caught Sheryl last night for the closing night at the Orpheum in Boston. As a veteran of 5 previous shows, let me tell you that this one smoked the others into oblivion. I was very impressed. basic details - setlist similar to other nights, except that My favorite Mistake was moved down to about the 5-6th song of the night. Fit in much better. Big difference was the encore. I don;t know if she has done this the past few nights (I'm a bit behind on the digest) but the 2nd encore was an ensemble of Sheryl/Band and Semisonic, doing killer covers of Dobie Gray's "Drift Away" and George Harrison's "What is Love?" - similar to the way she performed with Wilco in '97. Miscellaneous details - First (sorry, boys and girls) - Sheryl was loaded. Her eyes were just gone all night, intros to songs were much longer than normal, she missed a few cues, and actually nearly stumbled and fell during "Every Day is a Winding Road." However, this really helped her performance. Sheryl can sometimes be overly direct on stage; last night she was very relaxed. I'm also surprised how little folks have commented on just how good her band is on this tour - it blows the others off the stage (hey - I liked Todd Wolfe a lot, but these guys brought her to a new level). Finally, Sheryl looked very different than I have ever seen her - deliberately putting on heavy, heavy purple eye liner - almost to an Elvira effect. I was realy worried during her first song, which really dragged - but the crowd was super into it, and Sheryl really fed off their energy. She even said after the third song "You know, I'll admit that I was a bit tired when I came out here, but thanks to you guys, now I'm ready to go!", and at another point asking "so are they serving happy juice int he lobby or what?". Can't blame her for being tired - performing 5 straight nights is really too much for anyone. Her voice showed it - it was tired from the start - but the energy was amazing. So that's it from this corner - now back to lurking.
