Got to to the UCF arena early Friday Afternoon, and walked around to check out the place. I was a little disappointed that the show wasn't sold out yet, as it was a very small venue (in 96 she was regularly selling out 6-8,000 seat theaters). Sheryl came in around 4:30 for the sound check and played for about 30 minutes. Mostly newer stuff, starting with My Favorite Mistake and ending with Am I Getting Through. After the check was over, I got a chance to have her sign a few CD covers I had brought along, plus a concert worn blouse I bought that she had donated to a Charity Auction. Went back to the hotel and got my recorder together for the show. It was the first show I was going to try and record in several years, so i was a little excited and nervous. Got to the show, found our seats and then i tried to set up my equipment. It was then I found out that my rechargeable battery won't hold a charge anymore, it lasted for all of thirty seconds. I was really disappointed (sorry i don't have a tape for you Katie). But the rest of the day was great, so i tried not to be too sad. The set list was the same as the Hard Rock, and Miami, with one addition - a THIRD encore was included - HOME. This is what the grand piano is on stage for all night. Great set, and the band sounded really good. BTW - the programs were $12, and is a 16 page color booklet with lots of photos of her (none of the band) and the lyrics to the songs on TGS. The only other item for sale that hasn't been mentioned is a poster for $10. No CD's were for sale at the show. Saturday, i called around to find a new battery pack and found out it's a special order item and would take two weeks to get in. I finally just went ahead and bought a new recorder and thought if i could make a recording of the sound check for Tamp, it would help make up for the Orlando show. Got to Tampa, and went to the Sun Dome to check it out. Much larger than the UCF arena, and ticket sales were better, but it still wasn't sold out. But it was a little more promising. Sheryl got in around 4:00, and promptly closed the set for soundcheck. I was a little curious why, but found out during and after the show. Was also a little disappointed that i wouldn't get a recording of it. Show again started promptly at 9:15 (just so you know - when you hear Squeeze's 'Tempted' - you better head for your seat). It was Awesome. Much tighter than the previous night, the band was just incredible. After Am I Getting Through part 2, it became apparent why the set was closed earlier - they had been practicing to change the set list! Deleted tonight were Redemption Day (with the landmine speech) and Members Only. Added in their place were Crash & Burn plus Hard to Make A Stand. I missed the other two songs, but the energy on the two replacements more than made up for it. Show closed after the 2nd encore with Everyday is a Winding Road. I noticed after the show that Home was on the set list again as a third encore, but it wasn't played. Checked my recording after the show - Perfect! Went to the Double-Tree where the band was staying, and talked to a few of the Eagle Eye Cherry guys. Apparently most of the contracts with the arenas are only until 11:00 p.m., so if it comes up on 11, and they haven't gotten to the third encore yet, they have to leave it out. i wanted to find out why they mixed up the song list a little (not that i was complaining), but the guys said she would be at the arena for another hour or so - there were too many people hanging around byu the buses, and they didn't want them all following her back to the hotel - which was understandable. So we just headed off to bed for the night. I had promised to take my wife to Universal on Sunday, so I didn't have a chance to hang around Sunday morning and try to talk to anyone, but it was a great weekend. Crow's September 1997 performance seemed tired, strained and fussy. Then, she seemed intent on re-creating the recorded versions of her songs. Saturday night she transcended them. Perhaps it was freshness - this was only the third date of Crow's current tour. But more credit must go to an excellent backing band that included violin and cello, and the fine material that makes up her most recent and best album, 1998'ss ``The Globe Sessions.'' It was that material that drew the most inspired performances Saturday night, beginning with ``Anything But Down,'' sparked by slide guitar and a spacey Pink Floyd-style fade-out. Even better was ``It Don't Hurt,'' which usedd strings and vocal harmonies to give the song an added richness. It built to a frenzied climax with Crow rocking out at the edge of the stage as violin and cello sawed away. The smiles on the musicians' faces showed they were enjoying this as much as the audience. ``Am I Getting Through (Part I and II)'' showed that Crow's crew could work up a real lather, building to another peak in the song's first part before kicking into the raw, punkish second part. Older material benefited from Crow's willingness to take chances. Strings added an elegiac tone to the gritty ``If It Makes You Happy,'' and prominent harmonies added a new dimension to ``Leaving Las Vegas.'' Encores included the country- tinged ``Strong Enough'' and a joyous romp through ``Mississippi,'' a Bob Dylan composition. Crow concluded with a wrenching take of ``The Difficult Kind'' and the chugging ``Every Day Is a Winding Road.'' Eagle-Eye Cherry opened with a set of jangly, pleasant but nondescript pop. Although drawing shrieks from some in the audience, Cherry's music was indistinguishable from most of what passes for ``alternative'' rock. ------------------------------ End of sheryl-crew-digest V2 #51 ********************************
