I *believe* Rush is a good band, altogether different from the Bunnymen. FYI, Bruce, Ged's voice hasn't been that high since 1974, when he was 21 years old. Ged's now getting closer to *50*. They stopped "indulging" themselves in drum-solo-twenty-minute songs about twenty years ago. There's still plenty for folks to slag, but try to stay current, will ya? "Tom Sawyer" is an instantly recognisable, unique, and extremely popular song. It defies time. It's been on TV adverts lately and sampled for use in many, many other songs. I only *wish* the Bunnymen had as popular a song. Or as HUGE a loyal fan base. If you hate Ged's voice, as I know Red does, and probably a good bit of the free world does, then no, you will never like Rush. If that *isn't* a showstopper, there are loads of suggestions I could make as to what non-70's Rush anyone might care to listen to. Their songs have been an inspiration to me at some *very* dark times. My ex- HATES Rush but even he found a song he could like. It's called "Superconductor" ... go Napster it. "Marathon" is *the* song that got me through college; and "Nobody's Hero" helps me keep on struggling through adult challenges. - --Amy "You can do a lot in a lifetime If you don't burn out too fast You can make the most of the distance First you need endurance -- first you gotta last From first to last *The peak is never passed* *Something always lights the fire that gets in your eyes* One moment's high And glory rolls on by Like a streak of lightning That flashes and fades in the summer sky" ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 02:24:51 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas This is number 1 > The notion that their songs are wretched piles of steaming monkey-vom > with > ludicrous lyrics, risible vocals, and bombastically complex arrangements > is entirely a matter of opinion. Chris, If you listen to _Test for Echo_ you'll hear none of that. No bombast. And there is a place in the world for technically complex music with shifting time signatures and keys. A *LOT* of musicians pay tribute to Rush as a band that really taught them how to play. And live ... they top *every* band I've ever seen... yes, including you-know-who. There's almost a euphoric, second-coming, religious revival feeling of exultation in the air... Their music is too diverse to fall into the labels above, and Christ, even their haircuts have changed significantly. One shaves his head, the other's going bald, and Ged's cut his hair significantly. They managed to get where they are without ANY significant top radio airplay. By touring, and touring, and touring. And now they've such a large fan base that they can do whatever they want and screw the label. An enviable position that. They never sold out; they never ditched Ged's highly unusual vocals, or their intelligent lyrics, or their sometimes complicated music. They perform ALL of it on stage with precisely three people and did so long before sampling and digital synchronisation was possible. In the 80's, Geddy's Mac was their only backup musician. So I guess no one here likes Red Hot Chili Peppers? Cause their musicians were HEAVILY influenced by Rush. - --Amy ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 02:40:03 -0500 (CDT) From: amyr@jump.net (Amy Rupp) Subject: Re: seven-seas This is number 1 > My prison band insisted on doing City Lights (Journey); t'was when I > made my escape... Nothing like a good somebody-done-somebody-wrong-song ... "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" is right up there. However one of my hometown TV stations plays "Lights" to sign off, because it happens to be on a bay ... "When the lights go down in the city and the sun shines on the bay" ... which is TOTALLY stupid because it's talking about sunUP not sunDOWN. I preferred the National Anthem. I'll strangle the next person who is so unfortunate to play "Lights." Or howl along with Steve Perry. Whichever is most torturous for that person ;-) - --Amy ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 08:53:25 -0400 From: "Nate V" Subject: Re: seven-seas This is number 1 > So I guess no one here likes Red Hot Chili Peppers? Um they may have been into Rush sure but I would like to think that a FUNK band or if you wanna get technical a P-FUNK band (The P is for Punk) would have taken more influence from oh I dunno lets say George Clinton... or Sly Sylvester... hell Maybe Even H.R. (Take yer pick if I'm talking Bad Brains or Black Flag) But I have never read a single thing where they said they were influenced by Rush and I am a Chili Peppers fan n8 ====================================== Choices! mailto:majordomo@smoe.org Subscribe/unsubscribe Seven-seas Seven-seas-moderated Both available in digest form. ====================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Jun 2002 09:37:48 -0700 From: Subject: seven-seas Rushian Roulette Good morning ladies and germs.
