You hit the same points I did as I read the blog. I have a question though. Are song royalties still collected even on re-releases? I mean, everytime they re-release OR or put out another greatest hits album do Ian, Will, Pete (his estate and I assume his daughter) and Les collect royalties from the sales? I'm assuming that happens, but I don't know the industry. It might not be enough to retire but at least it's some financial support for the girl. - --- On Thu, 6/18/09, seven-seas-digest wrote: > Date: Thu, 18 Jun 2009 11:31:14 +0100 > From: Pete T > Subject: RE: seven-seas i guess we all forgot...... > > er no, well not until now anyway. having started reading > head on with interest > i forced myself to finish it and then read the other one to > see if it got any > better (all i can think of is i was at a low point myself > with no other books > in the house) - some interesting snippets padded out ten > times over by self > serving snivveling bollocks. Wow, 20 years. Like most of us here I'm sure, I can remember right where I was when I got the news. I was out in Vancouver BC, as I spent a lot of summer time there in my youth. I was at a Violent Femmes show the night I got in town & I was introduced to someone as being a huge Bunnymen fan & was told that Pete had been killed. I shrugged it off saying that I would know if this was the case, "I'd feel it" & I dismissed this as the worst kind of idiotic blasphemous gossip. Might have been the next day or a day or 2 later that I marched over to the local import record shop, as I knew they had NME etc there ( this is all pre-internet etc of course). I found the NME & there it was in the top corner: "Bunnymen Drummer Killed". I remember walking out into the street in a sate of hollow disbelief. I walked back to our little loft apt that 4 of us were renting for the summer, played Over the Wall & Zimbo & had a quick cry before heading out for my dishwashing shift that night. I remember telling the cooks at work, Vietnamese/new Canadian guys & other dudes a million miles away from ever knowing or caring who the Bunnymen were, that Pete had died & something/someone magical had been lost & that everything was different now. I have this copy of Heaven up Here that I took out with me for autographs when I followed a few shows in the US Midwest in January of 88. I remember the first night of the tour, Champaign/Urbana IL & they played All I Want early in the set, gorgeous hall & great seats & They start playing stuff from Heaven Up Here as I stood in frozen exploding joy. You see, my first show was in 86 without Pete & then I saw a few of the shows with New Order in 87, with Pete, but shorter sets & maybe Over The Wall once in those few shows I saw. But now its loads of Heaven Up Here stuff, just outta nowhere it seemed to me, pure bliss. So I had this copy of HUH with me as well as loads of other records & things to get signed, (all along with me on the greyhounds & in the stations). Over the week or so I was following shows I managed to get everyone to sign it except Pete, I had Pete on other things but just never managed to find him when I had that record out with the sharpie. So there it is, three guys signing next to themselves & just a (very) blank space by Pete. It just looked so wrong & would take on (& continues to be haunted with) such a sad and tragically strange feel after his death. This also brings me back to the first show on the second leg of that same 88 US tour in Evanston IL in April. It was the day of the show & I was out of smokes. So out I went & there I run into Les, Pete & Jake on the street. They ask if they can take my car for a drive so we all start walking back to the hotel & had a nice chat about the new record etc. Once we finally found the hotel, as I got a bit lost in all the fun, it was time for them to get back so we just had time for Les to wake up my rather hung-over friends and ask for a cigarette ( which blew their minds!) & time for a quick photo in the hall ( Chris Adams should hopefully still have a copy of this) & that was it. The last time I saw Pete was later that month in Vancouver. I remember seeing him in the lobby (of The Queen Elizabeth Theatre) right before they went on but don't remember him being backstage that night. I do remember that they played My Kingdom & a particularly otherworldly Over The Wall that night. RIP Pete. As always, your work carries more joy and wonder with every listen.
