They had some non-descript band supporting them then... 'Simple Minds' I think they were called. Their show last night was simply astounding - much louder and more polished than I remember from the late 70's. Opening with 'The Light Pours Out of Me' - - the song that first got me into them after being mesmerised by seeing it performed on The Old Grey Whistle Test. Line up is; Howard Devoto the all enduring and flamboyant showman, but looking a little more Uncle Fester-like now than the art student with a funny haircut; Barry Adamson, one of my all-time favourite bassists sported a waistcoat with Albert chain and a very dapper top hat. Dave Formula on the ivories - it was Dave's idea for the reunion I have heard (sincere thanks Dave!); John Doyle on drums and Norman Fisher-Jones (Noko) taking the place of the sadly missed John McGeoch on guitar. What I love about this band is, despite Devoto's conspicuously colourful presence on stage, every single band member is in the spotlight - there are no background musicians - everyone is at the front of the mix. This was not just candy for the eyes, but one's aural senses were thrown into the blender too. Definitely one of the best live shows I have ever seen. Supporting was 'Ipso Facto' a cool all-female line up of Emily Strange look-a-likes. I feel envious of anyone who is going to tonight's gig (also at the Forum)- You will not be disappointed. Over and out!
