When studying at Liverpool Hope a lecturer called Moore did a study of the nile. He gave the old British nationalist names for the lakes in Africa. He called Lake Nasser Lake Victoria and talked about the battle of Khartoom. This I feel was more political geography rather than physical. I studied a PGCE at hope but did not always agree with the teaching. His rationale was the new names given to the lakes and towns were that of political dictators. It is a good point not to use such names. I feel though using the old British names was wrong as there were certain atrocities under the British flag in Africa. The new Britian of a multi cultural society should not accept these names either in my oppinion. The future for Britian should be under a multi cultural banner surely not. My family originate from the British Isles in recent history mainly Ireland, France and Wales. A new beginning should not be using old British nationalist names in Africa in my oppinion.
