I quite like some of his solo stuff, good guitar, not the strongest singer - quite punky. I haven't followed any thing he's done since accosting Blur's guitar player via drunken demands for Syd Barrett covers from the first row at a 92 gig: "you just don9t fuckin get it" was his response - but I would maintain that I did get it & was calling him on it & it really was really pissing him off. In a related memoir from the same summer, I was told by the drummer of Slowdive that I was "the spittin image of Damon from Blur" he was even calling over bandmates to have a look at me - however - I have also been stopped in the streets by people thinking I was Eric Idle. Being on-topic, the night before the Ride/ Slowdive gig in Vancouver noted above, we had taken the ferry across to Victoria where we saw them in a tiny club - afterwards we hung out with Slowdive a bit, I was really drunk & was kinda getting in Neil Halstead's face a bit (in a friendly way) , accusing him of ripping of / (paying homage to) the opening sequence of "Going up" on Slowdive a b-side. He put up with me for a while, but I was relentless "bunnymen this, bunnymen that" I'm sure - so to end it he says : "look, I only have 10 records & they are all by David Bowie'. For the record, Slowdive blew Ride away both nights - after Ride's main set in Victoria - the crowd started chanting "Slowdive, Slowdive", Ride looked unimpressed by this & forego the encore , which was to be "Seagull" as I could see from the setlist next to the stage monitor in front of me. The Slowdive kids were really blow away by that response - they were super nice. Ride were not nice guys - & The tone of my Bunnymen cover calls to them was way less playful. When I called out for "Villier's Terrace" its was a way more snarly "fuck you poseur" & they knew it. I spent the rest of that summer demanding Bunnymen covers from the first row at gigs by the likes of House of Love The Catherine Wheel & The Charlatans. I remember really puzzling Guy Chadwick fr The House of Love with persistent calls for The Cutter & The Back of Love , he was really looking off with a " "what the fuck???" in my direction. I remember really feeling that it was my duty to keep these guys honest about the influence of the Bunnymen on them (or just how much greater the Bunnymen were than their bands) when they came to town, that was my job. I was quite the handful back then. You can never have too much disc space. Be sure to look at refurbished models on the Apple site as well. I'd also recommend getting the AppleCare warranty. Apple's customer service is second to none. The price difference between the online store and a brick-and-mortar Apple store is negligible, so by all means visit one if there's one in your area. Whether you have a Mac or a PC, download Apple's free iTunes program and you'll have everything you need to rip and manage your music collection. One of the nicer features is if you're connected to the web and insert a CD for ripping, it'll automatically find the album info and stamp the files with the artist's name, song title, album title, etc. Often, it'll even show the cover art. Before you start ripping, set the preferences to use MP3 format at 128k bitrate or higher. The higher the bitrate, the higher quality sound you'll get, but at the expense of bigger files and thus more space taken up by fewer songs on your iPod. If you have a 60gb hard drive, that's less of an issue than if you have a 4gb. ;) My sweetie's 60gb iPod is about 3/4 full and has about a week's worth of music on it. As has been noted here, you are more likely to hear the difference in fidelity at higher bitrates if you compare them side by side, so consistency is a virtue. For most people, 128k passes as CD Quality. 160k or 192k is a viable compromise. If you download music, you'll get bitrates all over the place. I wouldn't worry too much about all this. As for headphones, look into those nifty new Bose in-ear models. They're supposed to be amazing. Hope this helps. best, FBC ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ **************Bunnymen Online Presence******************** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ http://www.villiersterrace.com/ * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ http://homepage.ntlworld.com/stevedoughty/index.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ * ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V6 #102 ********************************
