The other point worth mentioning is playback device. It doesn't matter how good the input is if you're using sub standard speakers/phones etc. Any increase in quality could be negated. In fact if you're only talking about sound quality on a personal mp3 player, I'd go as far to suggest that the quality of the headphones is more important than the player to a big degree. Otherwise, you are already making compromises so the whole thing is a non-issue??
