Where were you when you heard? >> I suppose I'm a day late and a dollar short on this, but I have always had a pretty vivid recollection of what I was doing when I heard the news. I was on the way to the airport for NYC with my mother, early in the morning and the radio had played about five straight Lennon and Beatles tunes, so I suspected something was up. When the DJ announced it, of course, it was a horrible shock. The next couple of days, I managed to make my way by the Dakota where throngs of people were holding vigil. Being in New York around the Christmas season with this type of tragedy hanging in the air was an eerily surrealistic experience I will never forget. Red says: This is awful, but, I don't even remember what I was doing when I found out. It's not that I didn't care or anything like that, because I did enjoy the Beatles' music...didn't really own much though, probably because I was the oldest child in my family, so I had no older brother or sister to influence me with music, my parents weren't into music much, well, my dad used to listen to bands like Uriah Heap and Deep Purple, but I didn't live with my dad, (my parents divorced when I was 9) but anyway...to get back to the point... it probably would've had a bigger impact on me if I had been more into his music and I totally sympathize with anyone who was that into him...because I will never, ever forget the way I felt when I first heard about Pete's tragic death. My friend called me long distance. I refused to believe her. When I realized she was serious about it, I just hung the phone up and started crying. I was devastated. I remember how I felt when people thought it was pointless for me to mourn a *rock star*, but they had no idea how much the music of that *rock star* meant to me and since I had the great pleasure of meeting Pete twice....it went beyond the music....he was a real person that was a part of my life, if only for a few brief moments in body... but will be forever in spirit!! That wasn't my point.... I used the very extreme, opposite end of the spectrum to highlight the fact that you cannot use art alone as a reason to mourn cos you could just come unstuck.. Say you found an original painting at the local 2nd hand shop that you though was the most beautiful painting you had ever seen... Then you learn some years after buying it and having it pride of place in your front room that it was painted by that bastard... Nuff said, and it's an awkward one isn't it ? I'm sorry that I cannot be like some of you, I have to look at an artist as well as his/her art. Lennon's death didn't really affect me that much, so I'm neither here or there on that particular issue, but what I'm saying is that it is a brave person to disregard the person from the art as a reason to mourn.. simple... Yeah he did loads and loads of good tunez, but he could also be a bastard as stated, and just because I wasn't affected by his wrongdoings, it doesn't make it allright. The way you lot had a go at Ken is crap... I dunno about Ken, but my father fucked off when I was younger, leaving my mother to bring both me and my brother up whilst he was earning tens of thousands of pounds a year.. In fact, my mother had to rely on benefits etc for some of the time.. and we're talkin over 25 years ago here when it was virtually unheard of... It ain't in the same league I know, but I for one can understand what Ken is saying, irrespective of whether I agree with him or not. That's all...... We're all different, allow people to have their opinions, otherwise you're no different from that bastard I was referring to, but remember that you can never question fact. I'll give you another one... I quite like some of P.J. Harvey's music, but will never buy any of it because she's in favour of fox-hunting with hounds. (true!) Frustrated, and pissed off at the world Adolf was forced to give up his pursuit of beauty and art and unfortunately found himself a *very different* career...
