Besides, isn't anyone a little bit frightened by the joyous expression Bush has on his face whenever he talks about executing people? I don't oppose the death penalty, but the guy overseeing the process isn't supposed to ENJOY it. Bush is a lightweight, a nothing, a lucky little rich kid who has been bailed out again and again by his family, and has no business being, or even running for, the office. I still can't believe the Republicans had McCain available and went for a silverplated doofus. The best you can say about Bush is that he seems like a genial dipshit. That's some qualifications to be president. Also, as an attorney I know that the largest long-term effect a President has is the Supreme Court justices he appoints. There has been a great deal of absolute bullshit on this issue from the Nader nuts, and from Bush. Fact, on one issue after another, abortion rights, separation of church and state, press freedoms, etc., the Supreme Court is right now voting 5-4 in favor of protecting individual rights. A one vote change, bye bye those rights. And the next president will likely get to name 3 out of 9 justices, possibly 4 depending on whether there are any expected retirements. Add to that the number of lower court judges that the next president can name, a number that is inflated at this point b/c Republicans in Congress have held up numerous nominations in exectation of a Bush presidency. First addressing the Naderite bullshit, Nader says that voting for him and getting a Bush president wouldn't affect anything b/c presidents have been surprised by the votes their nominees make. H/e, the fact is that presidents have been accurate in their expectations far more times than they have been inaccurate. In that time that the Republicans have focused on this issue in naming their appointments, they have been surprised only once--by Souter--and W has been quite careful to never mention Souter as an example of the kind of judge he would nominate. Do the math. Nader is smart enough to know that you don't bet on someone making a mistake and being surprised--he's just confident his supporters aren't smart enough to figure that out. The Bush bullshit on this issue, and other constitutional issues, is his grin and wink suggestions that people shouldn't worry much b/c he won't push these issues. The crap in that, and what Bush knows quite well, is that the president doesn't push these issues--Congress, the state legislatures, and prosecuters and police push these issues, and the question is whether there will be a president around that will veto abuse legislation, and a court system that will police the police, the Congress and the legislature. Again, Bush is able to shovel the manure on this counting on most people to have no understanding of how it all works. Hell, who knows if Bush even knows how it works. Another finally--a permanent Green Party in the U.S. is BAD thing. For all the carrying on about third parties, the governmental structure in the U.S. isn't configured to give any real power to third parties. There is no proportial representation in the U.S. For example, in many parliamentary systems, when there are three parties and one party gets 40% of the vote, another party gets 42% of the vote, and a third party gets 18% of the vote the third party gets approximately 18% of the seats in parliament. That's real power and the ability to if not get things done in of its self, to at least push things the right way by being the key to either of the other parties getting a majority. In the U.S., the party getting 18% of the vote gets nothing. Squat. Zilch. The big zero. Slapped on the ass and sent home. That's why Republicans are sneaking money to advertising for Nader--votes for Nader disappear into a black hole with no effect other than to help Bush. The reason why a U.S. Green party is bad is that it will never, ever, in a million years get even a winning plurality of the vote. Hence, the people that vote for it are taken out the electoral process the same as if they just didn't vote at all. End result--the effective electorate able to put a president, senators, representatives, etc. into office moves to the right by the exact percentage of the Green party's vote. The republicans would LOVE to see a permanent Green party that would get a guaranteed 5-10% of the vote each election--it would help the Republicans enormously, and if it *did* get to 10% it would guarantee a Republican sweep of almost all elections. Nader has no bigger fans than the guys in the RNC.
