I'm new to the list. Gee, this thread seems so technical...I can't follow a lot of the stuff I'm reading...I just like Echo & The Bunnymen. I've only got two CD's, but love them to death, and wish to collect more. I'm in the process of moving from Atlanta to Redwood City, CA, just arrived with moving van this past weekend, still in corporate housing (and anyone familiar with the bay area prob. knows it'll be a long while till we find a place permanent!) Anyway, a brief introduction as to why I'm even here...I've only been on the internet, period, apx. a year. But b/f has a career in this field (works with Excite@home, hence living here). So I'm not at all as familiar as you guys are. Anyway, I've had all my stuff (including my beloved cd collection) in storage since April, while I attempted a 6 month thru hike from Mexico to Canada (includes very little music). So two weeks ago, upon flying back to ATL to get all my stuff out of storage to move out here, so happy to dust off my cds...Echo, (is there a more appropriate term I don't know about?) and others...but Echo & the Bunnymen was the first I couldn't wait to listen to after 6 months. Played my old favorite, (forgot which CD) that has Gone, Gone, Gone, and Flaming Red...and after all this time, STILL couldn't determine the lyrics! I decided right then and there to "find" them on the internet...not that easy, since the source I found apparently didn't know them either. Anyway, in the process, I found this, and, well, also belonging to a similar thread for Gene Loves Jezebel, decided to join. So, here I am, and I STILL don't have all the lyrics! Sad to say, I have never even bothered learning the band members names/instruments, etc. I'm not a musician. I just love their music! But I guess I've found the right place to learn all this, right? I wouldn't mind betting that even Mac couldn't tell you now what some of the words he was singing in the early days were. 'Obscure' springs to mind. Noel's lyrics are a lot easier to make out than some of Mac's early stuff, but the web site even quotes him wrong as well. And welcome to the Bay Area, too! I'm sure you've already investigated housing search companies, but several years ago, I found my apartment through Metro-Rent (better than Rent Tech.) You might also want to check Craig's List (http://www.craigslist.org) It's a matter of timing - jumping on stuff the second it appears. The rental market is scary, but it can be done! Well, I really didn't want to get into this, but I think I'm gonna have to.... I would LOVE to vote for Nader. I mean, I would give anything to see someone like that elected. But let's face facts here, he's not gonna win. But W. just might. And that HORRIFIES me. I'm not overly fond of Gore, but he's a whole hell of a lot better than W. who is, IMHO, absolutely too stupid to run this country. So don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Ralph's, but I just can't vote for him - it's too close an election for protest votes. Again IMHO, the point is to do everything we can to make sure that W. doesn't get elected. And if that means a vote for Gore, that's what I've got to do. Redwood City is > a bore. But SF seems rocking right now for live music. for years some have called it "Deadwood City", heh heh. But it's far far, improved over the last 5 years since the internet cos. and dotcoms brought some economic life back. A few bars and restaurants anyway... As for SF, the musicians are storming City Hall because the relentless rise of rents has made it impossible for them to survive in this area. There has been a mass exodus of musicians from the Bay area for years now, and I'm afraid in a few more years this will be a cultural deadzone with million-dollar condos and computer millionaires and nothing much else. Clubs are closing all over the city cause the yuppie neighbors in their lofts don't like the noise. Maybe after the next big quake prices will go down. Unfortunately, we are about due for one, it's been very quiet recently ... too quiet: http://quake.wr.usgs.gov/recenteqs/Maps/SF_Bay.html - ----- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe seven-seas or unsubscribe seven-seas-digest to get off the digest And here we thought Mattel was happy just cutting Ken's nads off: http://anon.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.openpgp.net/censorship/index2.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 10:13:31 -0800 (PST) From: Anne Gleeson Subject: Re: seven-seas Re: RC/SF Well put. All of the reasons I've been seriously contemplating a move lately.... The City has changed an amazing amount in the time I've lived here (gulp, nearly 11 years!) The music scene has all but dried up, no one respects what a gorgeous and slightly old fashioned place it is (all of the old institutions - bars, restaurants, etc. - are closing down in favor of overpriced yuppie hangouts), everything - and I mean EVERYTHING - costs a small fortune, and we are very much overdue for a big shaker. Only problem is that there's no where else I can think of that I want to live except England. :) Anne __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Thousands of Stores.
