Strangely enough, I had much the same reaction -- picked up a cassette copy of Script of the Bridge for $2 Canadian (about 50 cents U.S., maybe 3p in the U.K. if you're lucky), played it, thought all the songs sounded pretty much the same, left it for a while, picked it back up, listened again -- and then the tracks started to insinuate themselves in my brain, particularly Second Skin. I picked up Strange Times from '86 after that (available for shockingly low prices at all good record stores) and couldn't stop listening to it for years . . . On second thought, maybe don't pick that LP up again. You might become addicted. Noel's "thumbs-up" gave The Chameleons U.K. a few more sales. While Mac called Mark Burgess' voice "crap". Ian is the greatest of all time, but sometimes his taste seems a little out of wack with Crow, Pumpkins, ABBA,... on his "Likes" list. Just my 2¢. Check out The Reegs CDs (Chameleons minus Burgess). Wow!! I just bought the new Radiohead CD today! I love it!!!! I've heard so many Radiohead fan's say they didn't like it, a few who did, and some who slowly began liking it after a while. I popped it in the player as soon as I got in the car and I was lovin' it immediately! I think it's great. So experimental. Ochre would be proud! It's definitely a big departure from their usual stuff. I've been meaning to get it for some time now, but just haven't had a chance. Well, yesterday the new issue of SPIN magazine came in the mail and it has Radiohead on the cover, (and a nice picture too...woohoo!...Johnny's the king of the scrawny pale guys!!! sigh!) anyway, a little while ago my daughter came over to visit and I showed it to her and she said: "Mom...I don't like their new CD. Neither does Ted. It's wierd." Well....when she said that....I knew I *had* to hear it right away because Ted is the biggest Radiohead fan I know (except for maybe Stoobie!) and he usually has really good taste in music. *weird*?? That was the key word...I knew when she said it was weird, I was gonna love it, so we went straight to Wal*Mart and got it! She changed her mind in the car. She likes it now! I think the fact that I played her the 'Exiter' CD by F.O.G. on the way to the store may have had something to do with that! That band always leaves you in a *weird* frame of mind!!! ;-) Red - ----- To unsub, mail majordomo@smoe.org with the message: unsubscribe seven-seas or unsubscribe seven-seas-digest to get off the digest And here we thought Mattel was happy just cutting Ken's nads off: http://anon.free.anonymizer.com/http://www.openpgp.net/censorship/index2.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 15:03:57 EDT From: Henry17306@aol.com Subject: seven-seas Chameleons & The Bunnymen Hi Red, In a message dated 10/22/00 2:22:18 PM Eastern Daylight Time, redhead@sunlink.net writes: >Well, I played it yesterday....and I still can't see what's so great >about it. Although my first experience was with "Strange Times". Mark's voice may sound ordinary, but he sings with passion unlike 99% of the other 80's bands. The Chameleons are one of those "obscure" bands along with The Comsat Angels; The Sound; Sad Lovers & Giants, and others that didn't get any US recognition due to lack of videos, touring, or promotion, but did achieve "cult" status here, although minor compared to other "cult" bands in the US. Continue to play the disc, hopefully, you will see the light like the rest of us did. You won't be wasting your time. Although you may not be able to use my comparisons with the other obscure bands, perhaps the closest mainstream comparison would be Bono prior to the Joshua Tree. There is a real sense of passion and honesty in what Mark sings about. Although The Bunnymen are my #1 band since the early 80's and The Comsat Angels are my #1 band in the last 2 + years. Both The Chameleons (Mark Burgess) and The Sound (Adrian Borland) sing with a "real" passion unlike Ian McCulloch who sings with a passion, but the lyrics are not real. The Bunnymen are more of a "mood" and they appear to sing with intellect, they really aren't saying that much about themselves or us as human beings. The Bunnymen's music is more cinematic than "real". Bottom line is that The Chameleons and The Sound are both worth investigating, but it's a different kind of music than we are used to, except for the early U2. Let us know how you are progressing. The same to you Charles. I'm surprised that so many people in the US who are devoted to top quality 80's music are unaware of these bands.
