Oh dear. And I left off the first half of this because it meandered. http://www.texasgigs.com/news/2006/jun/17/mini-reviewbrecho-and-bunnymen/ But the band is back, mostly, with McCollough and lead guitar player Will Sergeant as the two surviving members of the four piece group who released Siberia, an album that's easily their best effort since 1984's Ocean Rain. I finally got to see McCollough and Sergeant --- both sporting their original 80's haircuts --- at the Gypsy Tea Room. Despite suffering from a cold, McCollough sounded strong as he ran through the highlights of the band's 25 years worth of songs. For a solid hour and forty minutes, the band gave the audience "The Cutter" "Rescue" "The Killing Moon" "Seven Seas" an especially exciting and raw version of "Do It Clean" and, yes, "Lips Like Sugar." But because Echo has a permanent place in the hearts of suburban dwellers who long for their college days, they have to stick to an 80's heavy set list. That's unfortunate when Siberia is so good. They did do "Stormy Weather" which hopefully encourages the audience to buy the band's very mature new release. Still, I found myself rooting for them to play "Bedbugs and Ballyhoo." I thought I was going to be rewarded as the band had to stop for about five minutes as the drummer's snare had to be replaced --- you can't play Bedbugs without a proper snare. But the night ended without Bedbugs. Damn. The set did end with "Ocean Rain." Some genius in the audience decided to toss the remains of his Bud Light into the air at the end of the song for dramatic effect. Thanks for that. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ http://bunnymen.nexuswebs.net/ * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Jun 2006 22:22:51 +0100 From: "Raj" Subject: RE: seven-seas Indie 103.1 Blimey I bet it was a wide seat - -----Original Message----- From: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org [mailto:owner-seven-seas@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Charles Pham Sent: 16 June 2006 00:51 To: seven-seas@smoe.org Subject: Re: seven-seas Indie 103.1 In case anyone cares, here was the playlist from last night: "Do It Clean" - Echo & the Bunnymen "Gone Daddy Gone" - Gnarls Barkley "Push" - The Cure "A Certain Romance" - Arctic Monkeys "Delicious" - Catherine Wheel "Hard to Beat" - Hard-Fi "Happy When It Rains" - Jesus & Mary Chain "Do You Want To" - Franz Ferdinand "Blood" - Editors "Lyla" - Oasis "Zephyr" - Electrafixion * Had to mix in some newer artists/tracks, and had to exclude a couple of bands initially on the playlist because they had just played them a few hours beforehand. :( But, fuck, was it a thrill to be on air for a full hour, broadcast throughout all of Los Angeles & Orange County. They let me sit in Steve Jones' seat (Sex Pistols).
