But frontman Huey Morgan and his Fun Lovin Criminals have all the charisma and style to pull it off. The New York trio were in Liverpool touring their latest album Livin In The City (that's lovin' and livin' - the band have something against Gs apparently) and Huey's mate McCulloch, frontman of Echo and the Bunnymen, turned up to see the show. Huey told the crowd: "Mac's here somewhere - he's the guy with the funny hair and glasses and he owes me B#20." Smirking in a tailored suit, Reds fan Huey was hero-worshiped by the audience who chanted his name like a football crowd do a star striker. In between songs, he said: "God bless you Liverpool. I guess it's true what they say - You never walk alone." His excellent lead guitar solos shone, prompting one fan to show her (at least I think it was a woman) appreciation by throwing a pair of pants at him. Sipping from a glass of water and smoking, Huey gave a little preamble before a lot of his songs. From the funky riff of Scooby Snacks (complete with Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction sampling) and Smoke 'Em, to Supermodels on my D, it was the old hits that had everyone going. But there's no getting away from the fact that the band has some very good songs and a lot of OK songs. The real shame, though, was the lack of bass in the live set, a feature that normally drives their songs. It seemed this was because the band was trying to juggle too much between just the three of them - trumpet, guitar, bass, harmonica, drums, percussion, some of which was provided by a pre-programmed machine. With more lights and sirens than a speeding cop car, the stage show was, quite literally, blinding. Although there was a reasonable crowd it was by no means packed at the Liverpool University Academy, and given the spangly lights it seemed the band was still used to bigger gigs. But that didn't take away from Huey's slick delivery and the experience of watching the cool cats doing their thang. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ http://bunnymen.nexuswebs.net/ * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V5 #54 *******************************
