It was better than I really expected but fell short of the full band experience. A lovely mental performance by all - boy Cambridge rocked out sitting down - I bet if JC hisself was reborn in a manger in Cambridge all he'd get would be a polite round of applause. Oh btw I'm not mad - back to the tea towel saga - They were selling them at Cambridge - we had to buy one - on the grounds they are probably the most uncool items ever sold at any gig whatsoever. Live review: Nick Cave at the Corn Exchange By Nik Shelton How good does a gig have to be for you to pay #35 a ticket? Pretty special I'd say. Despite the hefty entry charge the Corn Exchange was sold out well in advance for a rare appearance of Nick Cave. Given that he was on tour with just a skeleton crew of Bad Seeds on drums, violin and bass it seemed likely that he would be performing a quiet set of his more mellow material. But this idea went straight out the window when the gangly Antipodean and his pals burst on stage to launch into a riotous rendition of West Country Girl. They crashed and clattered and raged their way gloriously through crowd favourites like Red Right Handand Tupelobut always gave themselves a breather to slide in some laid back b-sides, one of which got it's first ever public airing. Warren Ellis managed to conjure some fascinating sounds from his violin, whether dripping a folk melody off his mournful bow or punishing the strings through relentless wall of distortion. But it was Cave who held the audience in the palm of his hand throughout filling the room with his intense stage presence and toying with the crowd, never afraid to engage the seated masses in a sing-a-long or a bit of banter. "Nice porno moustache!" shouted one fan between songs in reference to his recently acquired Ron Jeremy-style facial appendage. "Yeah my wife thinks so," he snapped back. "It's done wonders for our marriage." Two hours, two encores and a standing ovation later and it's clear that everyone here has well and truly got their money's worth. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Feb 2006 01:50:36 -0000 From: "KPJ" Subject: seven-seas Re: [villiers-terrace] Nick Cave light ps I must say Warren was looking very much - if you saw him in the street you'd be expecting him to tap you up for 'the price of a cuppa guv'nor' ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V5 #31 *******************************
