However, after their acclaimed bOcean Rainb, released in 1984, the group split up, although it has reappeared lately. Indeed in these last few years, and also with singer IM and guitarist WS as the only fixed members, EATB have re-attained their best level in many years. The release of the splendid bSiberiab a few weeks ago and the groupbs coming tour in the next few days were the reasons for the following interview with IM. We were surprised with the good form that you show on this new album, comparable in many ways to your classic ones of the early 80sb& I believe that it is the best thing than we have done in long time. We are very good now as a group. This summer we played several festivals and it was very nice to see that the media gave us more coverage than many new groups who are fashionable. When it comes to the record, I believe that it has very good tunes. Our sound is very recognisable and I believe that always we have got that right, but this time it is the best songs that we have done in years... they are very clear tunes, very easy for me to sing. I had a long period when I didnbt find it hard to compose. We are writing songs all the time, so it makes sense that in the end we have a few good ones, really. Is it also this relationship in which you take group life more calmly? I suppose so... sometimes you take too long writing about things that happen, about life, and forget to live that life. Everybody needs to dedicate a time simply to live, to their feelings and emotions. With regard to your sound, youbre certainly changed since the eighties... We have always tried to make timeless records, not subject to the characteristics of a particular time, neither in the sound, nor in the arrangement, nor in the lyrics... The technology is good to improve the sound, but sometimes it is deceptive and you can blind yourself with what you find, which in the long run makes a record sound out of date and old-fashioned. That happened to many groups in the eighties. Have you noticed a type of eighties revival that has been talked abut so much? Yes, and itbs horrible. The eighties were an dreadful decade, just as much for music, with such a pile of atrocious production, as for politics, with the atrocious things Thatcher did in our country. There were good things, but it often happens that everybody pays attention to the wrong stuff, and I am afraid that that is what is happening. In any case, the eagerness to always copy seems negative to me. You can let yourself be influenced by certain things, of course, but if your aspiration is to sound just like a certain group seems to me that you arenbt going about things the right way. The sixties were fantastic; the seventies were also good, and there were many interesting things in the nineties, but the eighties were a desert. Definitively, I do not like the number eight. From outside, one gets the feeling that your position is quite comfortable; do you miss the success of your better times? Of course, the idea of selling millions of records is very attractive, but the truth is that we feel much more at home with it like this; we have the chance to carry on making records and live on it. We enjoyed the tours a lot, and at the moment always we found promoters interested in putting us on. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V5 #5 ******************************
