I was wondering if anyone could make VHS copies of Bunnymen footage, be it interviews, live performances or videos? Anything from the Pete period. Perhaps we could do some sort of trade, I'm desperate to see something like this but have no way of doing so. In all the years I've loved the Bunnymen, I've only seen the cutter video! Its a shame, really. Mining post-punk and synth-pop, these so-called bNew-New Waveb have come like Moses parting the malaise and inanity of the mainstream wide enough for the misfits to burst through. However, for every Coldplay, Bloc Party, and Ordinary Boys who are re-introducing New Wave to the masses, there was Echo & The Bunnymen, The Cure, and The Smiths who set the standard. And some of them are still around, showing the young ones how itbs done. Siberia/Echo & The Bunnymen Heading a shifting lineup, Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant carry on their legacy as Echo & The Bunnymen with the latest magnum opus Siberia. The 11-track CD, worthy of mention alongside classic albums like Crocodile, Heaven Up Her, and Ocean Rain, proves that most things of exquisiteness become better with time. McCullochbs signature croon has achieved further depth from, aside from age, a lot of cigarettes and alcohol: giving that irrefutable luster to the overall feel of the music. On the other hand, Sergeantbs iridescent, eastern-flavored guitar playing is as glorious as ever. Both stalwarts stand like the Argonath, Pillars of the Kings, in J.J.R. Tolkienbs The Fellowship of the Ring; kings of old slugging it out with the young buns, kicking butt, and taking names. The meat of the matter is, of course, the final arbiter and is not found wanting. Songs like the beautiful, paradoxically sunny bStormy Weather,b the hook-laden bAll Because Of Your Days,b bParthenon Drive,b the driving bOf A Life,b the melancholy bIn The Margin,b and the splendid bMake Us Blindb are some of the best songs since the self-titled, grey album. Not to disparage the preceding albums Flowers, What Are You Going To Do With Your Life?, Evergreen, and the McCulloch-less Reverberation, however, Siberia seems to have acquired the critical mass required to construct the near-perfect album. There may be no bKilling Moon,b bPictures On My Wall,b or bSilverb but the strength of this album is in numbers, the barbarians at the gates, the lies of the politicians. There are no shouts of bLook, up in the sky!b or bToo Late the Hero!b Mac and Sergeant have tapped into something celestial and spread the love evenly over the 11 songs. These tracks, in addition, hark the return of The Bunnymenbs bizarre wordplay: bSomething on the roof/Ibm in the wall/My silverfishing youth/Swim donbt crawl/Maybe itbs just a lie/But what if itbs love?,b reads like a watered down version of bThe Puppetbbthought-provoking and disturbing at the same time. I cannot praise this album enough; to say that this is tour de force would be an understatement. Listening to the latest Bunnymen CD reminds me of where U2 got their formula for success, a keen sense of injustice seeps in when you consider where the imitator and the innovator are currently ranked in the mainstream. Then again, the legends have never been known to follow trends or kowtow or to whatbs popular. Legends let their merchandise speak for them and, folks, Siberia is practically screaming. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Jan 2006 23:34:52 +0000 From: Barry Whiting Subject: seven-seas O/T : Over Your Shoulder Happy New Year to all.
