Long time lurker, first time poster. Just had to get in my 2 cents on the San Diego show. I have seen the Bunnymen in various forms (Echo, E-Fix, Mac solo) over 10 times since their Easter Sunday show in '88. Now that's not all that many compared to most of you but I think that it's enough to have an informed opinion of their performances and I don't think that the San Diego performance was all that bad. Yes, Will had a little trouble with his guitar but it certainly didn't ruin any of the songs. He's way too good to let something like that affect him. I think Mac's voice was fine. It wasn't the best I've heard from him but it was hardly the worst. I believe someone else mentioned in an earlier post (sorry, I don't recall who) that the transition from Scissors to All That Jazz was well done and I have to agree 100%. It flowed as if the two were one song and I don't think anyone there who hadn't heard either of those songs before could have guessed which one was new and which one was 25 years old. Innaway was unimpressive and although a couple of their songs had brief moments that caught my attention they didn't really do anything for me. They were sort of like a really low budget Radiohead. What really bothered me about the show was the wait between the bands. It was far too long. The stage crew had everything ready to go about 20 minutes after Innaway's set yet we still had to wait another 45 minutes or so for the Bunnymen. They finally took the stage at 11:15pm and it was about 1am by the time they were finished. The wait was ridiculous and they totally lost the audience. Back to hiding now. However, even this hardcore fan has to admit that the Los Angeles, San Diego, and Anaheim shows were some of the band's weakest shows in twenty years. First, Ian is on a slow suicide march. His over-the-top chain smoking will not only kill him young, but it is also destroying his voice. He could barely hold a note in any of the three shows. His voice sounded like he smokes three packs a day. Also, he adds insult to injury by drinking alcohol during the show, which further dries out his voice. This is a shame, because he has one of the best voices in rock music. He also doesn't seem to take performing very seriously on this tour, forgetting lyrics repeatedly throughout all three shows. Let's hope that he doesn't let it all go downhill. The Los Angeles show was plagued by the worst vocal performance I have experienced by Ian in over 20 years and over 40 shows. As always, Will's guitars were absolutely excellent and flawless. The Anaheim show was definitely the strongest show of the three. Ian's vocals were slightly better than the other two shows. And Will's guitar was right on the money. However, there was a significant problem in that the House of Blues oversold tickets. This meant that the venue no longer met fire requirements. Therefore, there was a line 50-100 people waiting outside unable to see the show. Only when one person left did the HOB let another person enter. This was terrible for those who had paid for tickets and missed a large portion of the show. It was worse for people who were already in the show and chose to use the restroom. Upon returning, they found they then had to wait in line and we're missing the show. The San Diego performance was met with a disinterested crowd primarily because of a one and a half hour delay before the Bunnymen took the stage. Throughout the show, the crowd was engaged in heavy conversation. many just didn't seem to care because the show was disorganized and weak. Showing little respect for their audience, there was not even an apology from the Bunnymen for the extremely long wait . Boos came from the crowd, and a large portion of the crowd in the rear was chanting "bullshit" as the Bunnymen took the stage. The first three songs were plagued with problems with Will's Fender guitar. It seems his guitar technician wise unable to properly tune or set up the guitar . For each of the first three songs, Will tried the Fender guitar, the songs were delayed, and a hollow body guitar was brought out for him to play instead . Needless to say, the songs did not sound right on the hollow body, since they just didn't have the drive. That was no big deal however, as his performance was flawless for the rest of the show. Ian's performance was weak and disinterested. He repeatedly forgot lyrics and one of the songs even had to be started over. He also chose to speak incessantly between songs in a indiscernible mumble that each time brought the showed to a standstill . We can only hope that the Bunnymen get their groove back. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V4 #588 ********************************
