New Order, Brixton I was thinking at the gig, it was around 22yrs since I saw them first (even longer for Mr Bird) and live and on record they can be sheer genius or pile of pooh. That's how the gig was, same as ever. Worth the 38 quid for just Temptation Then for encore they did Shadowplay/WARSAW/She's Lost Control, this is why they've been my fave band for SO long, utter brilliance. Transmission rocked but not a big fan of their rendition of Love Will Tear Us Apart (mine and Jon's fave single of all time and one I bought when it came out in '79) Listened to Heart and Soul on tube home and as I type, thank Christ for me iPod. Oh and that fat hairy f**k Arthur Baker span some very good tunes beforehand. We're talking about legendary Liverpool band, Echo and the Bunnymen and their new CD, Siberia. Their tenth album, it's being universally hailed by music scribes as their best since they reunited back in 1997. Since then, they'd put out rather inconsistent and unsatisfying records, but Siberia will take Bunnymen fans on a pleasing trip back to the group's early/mid '80s commercial and creative heyday. Formed in 1979, Echo and the Bunnymen fused psychedelia and post-punk elements into a compelling sound, and the combination of Ian McCulloch's dramatic vocals and personal charisma and Will Sergeant's aggressive yet atmospheric guitar style made them major stars in Britain. They were never able to repeat that success in North America, and McCulloch quit in 1988 to pursue a solo career. The others soldiered on fruitlessly under the same name, but it took Mac's return to the fold in '97 for things to improve. Over the years, Sergeant and McCulloch have had their disagreements, but Will told Tandem recently that "it is alright now. We're on the same mission, so it's not a problem. " We reached Sergeant in the middle of the Bunnymen's current European tour, and he reported that "the shows are going brilliant. No duff ones yet." This scribe (a longtime fan) then mentioned seeing Echo and the Bunnymen in London in 1979, back when they still used a drum machine. "If you'd told us then that we'd still be touring in 2005, I'd have said 'no chance of that,'" laughs Will. Do you still enjoy it? "No, it never was fun. Where did you get that idea from? The touring I mean. The playing live is great, but there's all the other crap that goes with it. Stuck on the bus for days on end. The novelty of that wore off after the 25th pack of cigs," says Sergeant. The distaste for touring is one reason Echo never struck it as big as, say, U2, an inferior band who clearly borrowed from the Bunnymen. "I think it would have happened, but then Mac left and that rather put the full stop on it. The other thing is that U2 put a hell of a lot more work into it than we did. They played everywhere all the time. We didn't want to go on tour in America for two years." ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2005 13:32:04 +1300 From: "Kristin Smith" Subject: seven-seas www.corrieretandem.com 2 of 2 2 of 2 Sergeant is pleased by the warm response to Siberia. "We can't really ask for anything better. I didn't think 'oh this is better than the last one. ' It takes me a while to get my head around the records, but enough people are telling me that it's good." It reunites them with Hugh Jones, who produced their brilliant 1981 album, Heaven Up Here. "A serious slice of the credit should go to Hugh Jones. It was just great to have someone in charge for a change. We've been producing ourselves, and it's a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. With Hugh, it's like 'that bit's rubbish' or 'do it again.'" The timelessness of the epic Echo sound is confirmed by the group winning fans not yet born when those first records came out. "Every gig, down the front will be young kids, and you think 'why are they here? I hope they're not there just because other bands are going on about us now. I hope it is for the quality we come out with." The Bunnymen are getting serious respect from bands like Coldplay, and Will is getting closer to his key ambition. "I'd love for us to end up with the same status as a group like The Doors or The Stones, where it doesn't matter what age you are to enjoy them. That's my target really, to be seen as a classic band." In turn, Sergeant is quick to name artists who have influenced and inspired him. "The likes of Arthur Lee, Roky Ericson, Sky Saxon, The Doors, John Cale and Lou Reed. All them dudes are like heroes to me. They influence you and you influence someone else. You can trace it back to the cavemen who banged two rocks together! I can see a direct line between what is going on now and the Dadaists and people challenging everything at the turn of the last century." Will has got to meet some of his heroes. "Ray Manzarek [Doors keyboardist] was at the first show we ever played in L.A., and I've met Iggy Pop a couple of times. And David Bowie, who's a nice chap. It's not really me to just go up to people, but I did get Bowie to sign all my records." He admits he can't get totally enthused over the young Brit bands. "I like some of the new stuff, but it's not like when we were punks and you really got into something, like when you'd hear Television. With the bands now, it is not really my era. It generally makes me think, 'they sound a bit like Wire and Wire is better.'" ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V4 #540 ********************************
