For all the bashing that we Americans get for creating the likes of Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys, when it comes to knowing our musical history, we are in fact, much deeper than the Brits. Although McCulloch is well aware of his legendary status, he comes off as very humble and affable. bWhat people perceive me as, doesnbt make me any nobler.b I wasnbt prepared for what a nice and classy guy McCulloch is and his extremely articulate and eloquent nature. He embraces his fans as if they were his children. An interesting subject arose when he was noting his San Francisco fan base. Although Echo and the Bunnymen has never been a goth band, they draw huge numbers in the Bay Area from that sector. bWhen I see all the goths at our shows, Ibm always tempted to say, bWe see more dyed hair in San Francisco than anywhere else,b but Will says, bDonbt alienate them,bb he jokes. bI like the Cure but I never thought it was a goth band. I think itbs music at the end of the day. I like the fact that we appeal to them. I know that kids have to go a certain way because in school you want to be heard. Youbre not normal so you donbt want to be normal and goth seems to be a way out. Therebs a legion of people who want to dress the same way and be outcasts and thatbs cool, bcause I was like that.b bI kinda helped perpetuate that look with the overcoats and so forth, I thought that was more like Frank Sinatra, now everyonebs got them coats.b Imagine the irony in that. having your attempt to capture the bSinatrab feel wind up being misread and becoming one of the most popular fashion statements of the 80bs! But itbs not only the goths that McCulloch notices about his American fan base. bI also notice that in America we appeal to many different ethnic backgrounds. To me it means that we got so many things in our music, we got soul, we got this, we got that...webve been told in the past that we are a soul rock-band because we wear it on our sleeves.b With time running low, I asked McCulloch what went into the writing of one of the most popular 80bs anthems ever, the classic bKilling Moonb off of their Ocean Rain album. bIbve only told two people this story,b he begins, bI got the idea for it one day when I was listening to David Bowiebs bSpace Oddity.b There is this one part of the song where I thought Ibd like to change it from a C to a D minor and sustain the note longer...b At this point, McCulloch proceeded to recite the lyrics to bKilling Moonb word by word. I was speechless. As we signed off, I thanked McCulloch for one of the best interviews I have had the pleasure to be involved with and complimented him on the new record. In closing, he made a final comment about the title of the album, bSiberia has been around for a long time and we are making Siberia a lot hotter than it otherwise would be.b ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Nov 2005 16:02:01 -0500 From: "David Whiting" Subject: seven-seas Re: Macca Assaulta Just back in town, after a week away and getting caught up on things. I'm sure, that in retrospect, Mac would probably feel awful, if it's true and I would hope the victims could forgive him. I'd probably just have to laugh if one of my idols (hate the word, but can't think of a better one, right now) challenged me to a fight...but perspectives change when a loved one gets nicked. So if any of the stuff I read is true, Dr. Dark wants to prescribe Zantac for the acid reflux and Yoga/meditation for the anger management...hey, it all worked wonders for me :)) > Date: Thu, 03 Nov 2005 21:07:29 -0500 > From: "willoc@flashmail.com" > Subject: seven-seas Macca Assaulta > > I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this...thanks to Google alerts! > Not too cool sounding but I'm sure there is more to the story...let's hope > > http://www.sundaymail.co.uk/news/feed/tm_objectid=16310254%26method=full%26s > iteid=64736-name_page.html > > BUNNYMAN'S ASSAULT RAP > Oct 30 2005 > > Rocker charged with attacking fan > > By Billy Paterson > > > ROCK star Ian McCulloch has been charged with assaulting a female fan > after > a gig. > > The Echo and the Bunnymen singer allegedly attacked the woman and her > boyfriend at an after-show party at Glasgow's Barrowland. > > The 34-year-old woman needed hospital treatment for a gash to her head. > > It is claimed Liverpudlian McCulloch, 46, became violent after the couple > brushed past him on their way to the toilet. > > He is accused of kicking in a toilet door, which allegedly struck the > woman > on her head.
