One of the best things about this list is referrals from people I really rate as having good taste. Brilliant source over the years. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org [mailto:owner-seven-seas@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Barry Whiting Sent: 04 November 2005 17:40 To: seven-seas@smoe.org Subject: seven-seas O/T Al Nettles wrote: >* New My Morning Jacket song, bad ass. > > > Been listening to the album 'Z' a lot recently and it's almost good enough to forive them the beards. Spent just one term their and left (long story). Following year I went to Brunel Uni and did absolutely nothing (study-wise) all year yet passed the year based on what I'd done in one term at Manchester. Just goes to show the difference even between universities. Grants were great and if not for them lots of people would not have taken that extra step to further education but I also saw many people abuse the system. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org [mailto:owner-seven-seas@smoe.org] On Behalf Of jswee Sent: 05 November 2005 10:08 To: seven-seas@smoe.org Subject: Re: seven-seas A bit of politics & Bunnymen O/T Cheers, Can anyone suggest any good nightclubs or pubs up north (england)? I don't go clubbing much anymore but when I disappear up north I like to have a bit of fun ! As for some Universities being glorified polytechnics I have experience of both old & new Universities. I went to Leeds University in 1992 & dropped out in about 1994. In my first year where I achieved a 2:2 in Geography & a 2:1 in my subsiduary of Management studies. I then smoked too much & became very ill in my second year. I decided to transfer although Leeds said I could come back & leave my place open, I chose to change university (which was the biggest mistake I've ever made !). I looked at Liverpool & Manchester University but both said there courses were full. I chose to move to JMU (which is an old polytechnic, 1994 - 1996). I found that the second year course in JMU was exactly the same as my first year in Leeds ! This lead to me not being motivated, frustrated & at times drinking too much. However, JMU offered great courses in the third year such as philosophy of geography, Tourism, China & I did my dissertation on race & racism. I achieved a 2.1 but I do believe that there should be somethinmg of a "ranking" system of Universities ! I then did my teaching qualification at "Liverpool Hope" University (1996-97). I had planned moving to Liverpool after Leeds Uni to do a teaching qualification so it came about in the end. So on your view that some universities are glorified polytechnics I would agree that there is still a distinct difference between the "old" & "new" universities. I think that employers do recognise the fact that this is true. I used to joke about poly students when I was in Leeds but it's just a bit of fun. the work is still quite difficult ! & some should specialise in things such as "sports science", "Tourism" & other new courses. Someone at work who has recently gone to Cuba said a lot of people who were in the tourist industry have degrees (great!). I went to Parga in Greece on a trip & the woman (tour guide) had great in depth knowledge of Greek Mythology & History ! It was fascinating & one of the reasons I love organised trips ! BRING BACK GRANTS ! (I used to spend sometimes over 12 hours in a room studying for A level exams, surely this is hard work & should be rewarded ! - don't make universities stop people from comprehensive schools going due to debt !). Jonathan P. Sweeney Ps You should educate yourself whether a student or not. I love poetry - Paul Farley, Roger McGough, WBYeats, Lorca etc.... and have a greater thirst for education now I'm in my thirties ! & this just adds to fun in life ! - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Stu Bird" To: Sent: Thursday, November 03, 2005 11:50 PM Subject: Re: seven-seas A bit of politics & Bunnymen > Will's club night is called Friction.
