Alongside the Smiths and the Cure, McCulloch's band Echo & the Bunnymen helped establish Brit-pop's supremacy in the mid-'80s. Since then, McCulloch has boasted that his dark, lush track, ''The Killing Moon," is nothing short of the best song ever. But if he's worried that he can't surpass his past glories, he doesn't show it on ''Siberia," the band's first album in four years. McCulloch and longtime co-songwriter Will Sergeant -- whose lyrical guitar helps create the air of moody romance as surely as McCulloch's brooding vocals -- have reunited with veteran producer Hugh Jones. (He also helmed 1981's ''Heaven Up Here," the band's second album.) The album's title track is a new classic, with an infectious, shuffling beat that carries McCulloch's swooning vocals and a sinuous guitar melody. And on ''All Because of You," with its pretty, love-struck pop, the band sounds confident and inspired. With this fresh batch of stylish, emotionally resonant pop, Echo & the Bunnymen do justice to their reputation. Echo & the Bunnymen play Axis on Nov. 19.
