I was thinking the same thing about "Sideways 8". I find I'm enjoying the album much more than I expected. I also had trouble buying though. I couldnt' get to the record store until the day after it came out, and they had sold out of all the copies they had already. The owner(who I know) was very surprised that they all had sold out so soon. I had to wait a few more days to actually get it. I find that I am still listening to the album each day and can't seem to stop. I think I pretty much like the whole thing from start to finish, which is something I haven't been able to say for a long long time from them. In fact, as good as I thought Evergreen was, I think this is better. I'm tending to agree very much with you here! (But I guess that's who Mac is these days.) I'm FINALLY getting to hear the album where I can concentrate on it. Had two mere listens the week it was released, heard someone else's copy who doesn't live in my town, and when I tried to buy my own copy, I discovered the damn mall didn't have it. In fact, NO ONE around here has it! I was pissed off! I've ALWAYS been able to walk into the mall and buy me a new Bunnymen album on the day of release! :-((( Finally had to give up and order it online. So I've not heard it again, until now. :-( Just arrived today! %$#@&^ Hence my lack of comment. Anyway, truthfully, I must admit, the first two times I heard it, I was really disappointed. :-( But now, after finally hearing it again, three times just this afternoon, with headphones, I'll agree with whoever said it was a grower. Some of it has grown on me more than I expected after my first listen, but like you said, Steve G, I feel most of it sounds like it should have been saved for the next Mac solo album. (maybe he realizes he needs Will!) ;-) I will say this, though, it sure is a catchy album! Should have technically done better in the charts than it did. But the weird thing is, most of it sounds way too familiar, like I've heard it all before. Some of the songs sound just like some of their other tracks..... still trying to put my fingers on which ones they are, coz I'm not sure if they're from WAYGTDWYL (which I seldom play) or Mac's solo stuff (which I seldom play also), but I sure can't hear any HUH resemblance like everyone was saying while it was being recorded. :-( Some are noticeable though, coz Parthenon Drive sounds like it came straight off the Grey Album! And a couple of the tracks sound just like Electrafixion.... which I'd say are my favourite ones on the album. After 'Of A Life', which has some of the album's best Will-work on it, I think the album falls slightly on the WAYGTDWYL/Slideling side of things, which as you all know, does nothing for me. It picks back up with Scissors in the Sand, thankfully, or I'd have to buy the vinyl and only play one side! ;-) 'What If We Are' is one that has surprisingly grown on me, although I have to turn off the 'rock bottom' stuff at the end. Two or three times would have been enough. I can't decide about the 'Siberia' track. First listen, I liked it......earlier today, I wasn't sure. I like some of the music...it reminds me of something else that I have, something not Bunnymen actually, (can't hear that Bedbugs thing someone mentioned) but the vocals are a bit iffy on it, I think. Overall, as usual, I'm missing Les on this album. :-( (well, nothing can touch Pete either, but that's a different story.) :-( I guess what I'm saying is, I don't dislike it as much as WAYGTDWYL, but I don't like most of it as much as Evergreen! Some bits are great, but the album as a whole didn't grab me as much as Evergreen did. Hope they play Scissors live! That should do the trick! :-) Red ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Oct 2005 09:24:59 -0400 From: Rob Maher Subject: Re: seven-seas The Crystals Since his name was mentioned, I just have to say it. I can't stand Phil Spector. I think he was WAY overrated and I think that silly "Wall of sound" nonsense was just that. Ok I prepare for retaliation, but I couldn't help myself.
