The thing tracked east at the last moment and passed us by. We got the 'clean' west side -- no tornados, not much rain and no more wind than what folks in Wyoming would call a good stiff breeze. The only casualty at our house was my right big toe, which was trod upon by a visiting Rottweiler. He was a fine fellow, but he outweighed me by about 20 pounds and it was sort of like being stomped by a horse. :) We spent the night in the living room, since those windows were boarded up and faced away from the worst wind. (And because the Rottweiler and his stable companion, a little horror of a Chihuahua aptly named Poopie, were tucked up in my bedroom.) We lost power about 4 a.m. Saturday. It was off 16 hours, but that was okay b by then, we just wanted to sleep. There's a lot of debris -- twigs and such -- over the yard, but no fallen trees or large branches. I think that is generally the case around town, but my cousin, only about 10 miles to the northwest, did lose trees. All the gas stations in the county ran out by Friday afternoon -- this was an even greater problem to the south of us -- and the freeways were a terrible mess. A lot of people trying to go further north wound up sheltering in churches and such. The scariest part of this thing was last Thursday, when it was a category 5 and heading straight for Galveston (which is a lovely, lovely old city, and it was heartbreaking to think of it being destroyed). My ears were all stuffed up from the falling pressure, and that was such an ominous feeling -- knowing there was something out there so massive it could make itself felt from hundreds of miles away. Having had just a taste of this storm, I know it must have been truly horrible for those who wound up directly in its path. Hi. Never post here anymore really unless the Bunnymen are playing Glasto, but wondered if anyone was going to see them at the Blank Canvass in Leeds at the end of Oct?
