Independent on Sunday: Nice sound, nice hair, nice lips.....shame about the lyrics. That was always the problem with the Bunnymen. While Will sergeant, Les Pattinson and Pete De Freitas worked tirelessly to create some of the most crystalline music of the post-punk era, Ian McCulloch seemed content to scribble any old junk on the back of an envelope 10 minutes before the studio light went red A quarter-century later, the Bunnymen have barely changed. The intertwining of McCulloch's voice and Sergeant's guitar still works, but the former has no wisdom to impart, and the latter's music makes these songs sound more profound than they actually are. " (4 out of 5 stars) Reunions are typically mixed affairs, varying between joyous nostalgia and sobering disappointment. But the Bunnymen's comeback single, "Nothing Lasts Forever" (1997), was a shot of reawakened brilliance. If their previous albums fell well short of that renaissance, "Siberia's" lead off single, "Stormy Weather", and three quarters of their first album in four years show the Bunnymen can still resemble a force of nature rather than a business arrangement. Ian McCulloch and the guitarist Will Sergeant have abandoned their attempt to grow up and restored their original agenda: a pulverising, kaleidoscopic beat group (their old producer Hugh Jones is back, too). A widescreen "Make Us Blind" and a snarling "Scissors in the Sand" come driving out of the traps, borne on McCulloch's oblique lyrics "I'm in the wall/ my silverfishing youth/ swim don't crawl") and Sergeant's Persian carpet of sound. And "Parthenon Drive" could be an outtake from their 1981 classic "Heaven Up Here". Welcome back, again." ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 Sep 2005 23:46:48 +0100 From: "Shaz" Subject: seven-seas Siberia's here!! It arrived on Saturday morning :-) I have to say there are some surprises on this......my faves, in order, are... Scissors in the Sand has just blown my mind!!! Obviously a bit E'fix but also a bit Queens of the Stone Age (heard on an interview that Mac likes them). I also heard that they put a track at the end that points to the future and Scissors is nearly at the end (apart from the slowee that typically comes at the end) so that's a good sign. In a recent interview Mark wotsit played Boston and they laughed a bit about that but some of this is a bit Boston (a bit progressive) IMO. Parthenon Drive, love the bass in this one and the pulsating beat and the eerie ending - brilliant. Very Porcupine overall. Also like the lyric "revolving round at 45" A little bit Drummond there - 45rpm! Siberia - Ocean Rain era feeling to this one, sort of Parisian/European and I love the 1960's tv spy movie feel that Will has used before (eg. Just a Touch Away) . Obviously about Mac's Cocaine addiction (as mentioned in an interview). I like the use of the paranoia inspired panicky line "coming to get me now" as things spiral out of control at the end... Stormy Weather - this one is so pretty - like a breath of fresh air on the radio waves (well on 6 Music anyway). I love this jangly jem with the jagged edge (Will's blistering guitar break)! Love the opening to Sideways Eight, very optimistic and upbeat. The chorus sounds like it comes from the Sliding album. In the Margins - classic Bunnymen, classic Will soaring guitar - and angsty Mac lyrics - a Bunnymen anthem and fantastic live. Of a Life - more euphoric guitar from the fuzz. :-) Make Us Blind - reminds me of something from the seventies but I can't put my finger on what it is...??? I like the melancholy feeling of Everything Kills You and Mac's vocals. It's a bit like the apple in Snow White - rosy and tempting but laced with something wicked. What If We Are - I said before I thought it might be too syrupy but the "have I hit rock bottom" adds some acidity to stop it being too sickly. Still not sure if I love it yet..... All Because of You Days reminds me of U2 at the beginning. The best bit of this is Mac's pinky. Imagine if this was U2, it would be all over the radio - sigh, with the big video to go with it..... So I think overall (on first impression) it's a very good album with four of five excellent tracks and the rest are good. My one criticism is that Mac uses the same line over and over again at the end of songs too much sometimes. Better than Flowers and as good (if not better) than Evergreen IMO. I can't wait to hear some of these live coz they are always better live IMO. Hope they do Scissors live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shaz It's a satisfying stew of everything Bunnymen. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V4 #411 ********************************
