It's left a lasting impression: Siberia finds Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant reclaiming their original spirit. With the sculpting fingers of Hugh Jones, who produced the band's second album Heaven Up Here, they've distilled the chilling atmospherics of their past on Parthenon Drive, while the feet-on-the-ground longing of Everything Kills You could have been plucked from the Bunnymen's 1997 comeback, Evergreen. Always a band to wear their influences on their trench coats, a melody reminiscent of the Crystals' And Then He Kissed Me drips into the classic jangly indie of Make Us Blind. The constant driving rhythms give the impression the band are playing with an axe hanging over them, but the Bunnymen have rarely sounded warmer. The frontman of the Liverpool band releasing their latest album Siberia on Monday hasn't lost an ounce of his ego or fiery personality. "The new album's a masterpiece," he says. His unique voice - still as clear today as it was at the height of the Bunnymen - has inspired, among others, Coldplay's Chris Martin. So what was it like meeting him? "I didn't meet Chris Martin," says McCulloch. "He met me." He goes on: "For Rush Of Blood To The Head he came to see me to glean as much information as he could. "He is great. He's had a pasting in the press for the last album and gave me a call. But last time I saw him we shook hands on us playing with them in New York but that didn't come off. In my book if you shake hands, it's a deal." As well as spreading their influence across the pop and rock world, their music has walked straight onto the big screen with Killing Moon as the opening for hit movie Donnie Darko featuring a different kind of bunny man. Guitarist Will Sergeant says: "I think a lot of our songs are atmospheric and lend themselves to film. People are saying the new album's quite up beat but there are down points in it." The band are embarking on a tour with the closest line-up you will get to see of The Bunnymen today, ending with their home town in December. McCulloch says: "We're looking forward to the Liverpool date. "Last time we played it was mega. And when we played the Royal Court - that's the best we've ever felt on stage. "Liverpool people are the quickest-thinking bas****s on the planet. If you could harness the Scouse brain you could rule the world. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 06:39:21 +1200 From: "Kristin Smith" Subject: seven-seas Echo interview (2/2) 2 of 2 "The Bunnymen wouldn't have existed if we were born in Newcastle or Manchester. A large part of it is about being from Liverpool." Part of their success was also down to the friction between bolshy Mac and silent Sergeant which adds a creative spark verging on fireworks. After the tragic death of drummer Peter de Freitas, killed in a car crash in the 80s, McCulloch went solo before reforming with the Bunnymen in the late 90s. Speaking in a separate interview - they're not in the same hotel - Sergeant says:: "You can't get two more different people than me and Ian. "He is pulling it one way and I'm trying to push it another way and somewhere in the middle is the Bunnymen." (incidentally, Friction is the name of Sergeant's DJ night at Parr Street's 3345.) But they do agree on how it all came together. Sergeant says: "It all started at Eric's. We would go there two or three times a week. That's where our mates were - and there would always be amazing bands on. "It's flattering to have bands being influenced by us. But we were influenced too. Bowie, the Velvet Underground..." he says. The technical brilliance of Sergeant's guitar was honed on the record by veteran Bunnymen producer Hugh Jones who worked on their second album. Sergeant says: "Hugh was instrumental in creating our sound. It's great having someone in charge and he knows exactly what we're about." ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V4 #406 ********************************
