J-R - ----- Original Message ----- Brian, I think you forgot to mention Edgar Summertime who played bass on some Candleland B-sides. Also, Henry Priestman must have played keyboards on some tracks although he's not credited on the Cds, and I saw him touring with the band, I think it was in 1998. And the last Electrafixion line-up was made of Mac, Will, Jules on bass, Keith Davey on rythm guitar and George Phillips (Julian's brother) on drums. RE: DJ "Avalanche" Review: I'm still waiting for my copy & will send along my thoughts when I hear it But: "> This is Echo & the Bunnymen's quintessential album" Yea, ok, that9s a little silly people, We're talking about a band that created a set of four consecutive records in the 80's (& a few singles) that continue to stand in (permanent) singular otherness in the history of art. I'm super exited to hear the new record, as I really do get the sense that they've done something really special with this one but I would argue that the aesthetic and karmic conditions that brought life to Ocean Rain are simple not available now, & that9s ok, artists evolve, ( people evolve & life evolves) its ok for us to acknowledge (and celebrate) that there was a peak in the Bunnymen's powers at some point, it doesn9t diminish the joy or adventure of discovering their new work and trying it on for size all these years (and aches and pains) later on. it's just so lazy and boring when critics to make these "best thing they've ever done" claims...its a real insult to the tradition of the artist. In fairness, Mac does this all the time (which is obviously his complete entitlement AS the artist!), I think he's said every record was "the greatest thing we've ever done" (maybe even the grey !!) & there something about that self belief in him that is really generous and allows you a glimpse into how intense his passion to create for himself ad his audience remains. It it makes me happy and thankful to see that he is still so driven to do it. I agree with Chris that WAYGDWYL is a perfect record in every way, it (along with Evergreen prior) really announced the (time elapsed) shift from metaphysics to confession as the underlying poetic tone of the band. It features some of Mac's most sophisticated, emotionally naked and "complete" lyrics. But I would never say that it was "better than" Porcupine, that would be like saying that "Kind of Blue" is "better than" "Bitches Brew", it don9t make sense. I recently reviewed the new New Order record "Waiting for the Siren's Call", which I really love and very strongly recommend to all. I really feel it does represent a true return to form and is the strongest thing the'ye done since the brightest parts of Republic - but I didn't say it was their quintessential album !! that would be ridiculous - yet there are a few songs on it that I now feel the same level of warmth for as I do for the beloved earlier work & I'm sure the same will be the case with Siberia. Its just felt through a diffent sense of personal time, that9s why art is such a wonderful thing to carry along with you as you go, it paces out some of the moments of your life in a profound, invisible (and mostly un-sayable) partnership. You can be sitting on the bus, and deeply in tune with a light of genius, that9s pretty great! If I may: You wouldn't say : the sex I had last night was definitely the best sex I've had since Aug 87, you're just joyous in thanks for the newest sex! & its got more behind it now, its a good place to be. - -Ted Also from the cited review : "the catchy progressive title track (reminiscent of the Banshees..." To cite that band as some more essentially aesthetic source than the Bunnymen in any way is truly bizarre, grotesquely empty and historically irresponsible music journalism. The banshee's were cute & had some moments but were not artisans or Rockers of any lasting relevance whatsoever. My response to "DJ Avalanche" would be: "Do not dress in those rags for me, I know you are not poor;" TT ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V4 #380 ********************************
