It will take me a full two weeks to get caught back up at work. So which ones are you catching this time? Everything in it...news, gig reviews, album reviews... is condensed to a paragraph. It's not possible to sit down and read it ; the lack of content means you're forced to flick through it and so there's nothing to drive any enthusiasm, nothing to labour over, no time to build any passion. I came to the music press quite late in life but I remember one of the first Melody Makers I bought had a full page review of a Springsteen album written by Steve Sutherland. This was an entire full page when the MM used to be in broadsheet style so you can imagine the depth of content of the review...you know, there's no way this was a 'listen once and throw some trite phrases down' by means of a review which is what the NME stinks of now ; you could tell the reviewer had made an effort to understand the album, the artist and if not any of that, at least some time had been spent listening to the work....and, hey, if we didn't get that, at least we had a page of comic hyperbole (hello Paul Morley) which provided a measure of entertainment worth the entry price alone. "This Is Spinal Tap" has a review that's as long as the "album" title itself ("Shark Sandwich" -> "Shit Sandwich" for those who haven't watched it 10,324 times) -- that review's the reality now. [[ Incidently, the same issue of MM had a half page review (again folks, this broadsheet) of some unknown band who'd released an E.P. Stateside called "Come On Pilgrim"...only available to buy on import at the time but worth coverage it was felt. You know, that's what it was all about. ]] Anyway, I believe Stu's right again in that a lot of word of mouth is via the internet now. P2P of albums prior to release plus the low cost of importing foreign releases turns everyone into a critic before any journalist has had a chance to publish. There's still rays of light out there...http://www.pitchforkmedia.com is one I've prattled on about before but they're usually on the money and the articles drip with enthusiasm.; the resume-reviews they afforded each of their top 50 albums of last year would put most paper publications proper reviews to shame. I read the site daily ; it's a must. And, of course, some of the stuff recommended on here..."Nine Black Alps" being the latest flame. Anyhow, 'Siberia' has picked up some good 'consumer' reviews here already.. a snippet from a messageboard I frequent : * "They played some new songs this weeknd at the Carling festival. They didn't sound too out of place with the rest of the greatest hits set." * I caught up with the band for the first time in a few years at a couple of festivals this summer. They played a good retrospective set but I don't remember hearing any of this album [Siberia] live...hopefully [the forthcoming tour] will comprise of the best of this album and some "greatest hits"." - -- Take it easy, Barry ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://www.villiersterrace.com * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Sep 2005 04:07:48 +0100 From: "KPJ" Subject: Re: seven-seas NME review : Stormy Weather .....btw OT (srry) I've not seen any of it, no tv. Tried to keep up with good ol' Radio 4/World Service help. I agree it's a time for action, but I guess people can't help but be affected, give opinions, and pass judgement when they hear desperate statements like 'They're raping babies in there'. Which country is the leader of the western world?? No disrespect to our friends but doesn't it make you fucking weep to hear what's going on. Oh and that's not me passing any judgement (honest). > It's just awful watching it unfold on an hourly basis > on the various news channels/publications etc. I've > also heard some awful vitrious comments made by some > American commentators against their own people ( > terrible ) and government ( justifiable ).
