Are you shitting? If that's the case, then I'll have what he's drining. By the way, mine's a double. Don't believe the type. ADAMS chris adams wrote: 'Starts out nice, barrels along for a bit, gets all impressive at the end. Full stop.' Uh-huh. And the Velvets "Heroin" starts quiet and then goes all noisy and then goes all quiet and then goes all noisy again. Oh, and then quiet." And that's all ya need to know. And the "newsman" on the bloody telly goes all talky and then not talky and then talky again. And the sun goes all up and then downy and then up again. Yeah. More brilliant observations from the fukkin useless English rock press. A pound a word, scale, for these used-up cunts, who "go all smug" but never balance with the wry wit and intelligent observation that usta be the hallmark of the UK rock rags, which is what made 'em brilliant. Barry W. throws down 10 words and they're generally laden with arid hilarity, and a self-effacing knowledge, yet these people get paid to write inane, vacuous filler. They don't MEAN it (maaaaaan) and everyone knows it and no one seems to give a rat's ass. If you've ever happened to read anything I've written, love or hate it, I intended every word of it, as opposed to these off-the cuff, snide, yawnful verbal jerkoffs. (And this has nothing to do with the fact that I think Stormy Weather's a good song, it's about me hating obvious LAZINESS.) All that said, regardless of this review, I'll stand by Mr. Whiting's opinion that, regarding yr overpriced glossy rags, Uncut's the only way to go; it's the only rock rag I read anymore, except for Mojo on occasion, and whoever choses to publish my stuff (which is usually FILTER, who also retain this writer, Mikel, who is tremendous--chekkim.) Speaking of stormy weather--and I'm thinking of N'orlans, heuh--is it too early for Katrina and the Waves jokes? I used to love Wednesdays/Thursdays.. Nip off the bus a stop early to load myself up with the most imnportant text books of my youth.. NME, Sounds, and Record Mirror. Each had an slant that kept it apart from the other. Comparing reviews during double maths, building up mental profiles of reviewers, working out who seemed akin to yourself based on previous results etc etc The same applied to a lesser extent with the magazines.. I always remember The Face, whilst being a bit glossy, sometimes had some brilliant articles. Now? well it's easy to write a paragraph of uni-degree ( 3 to a pound )drivel after a bottle of red wine with a super-skunk spliff chaser because, "hey!!we're the only player in the park, it's my ball and I'll kick it where the fuck I want". The trouble is that once these tossers get in with broadcasters ( mainly Steve Lamacq and Zane Lowe ), then they have some mighty power and can dictate who are gonna be the big bands. Of course there will be exceptions, but for the love of God, without the Radio 1/NME barrage of Coldplay over the years, we would have just ended up with another, "higher" educated Athlete. The NME is fast turning into an expensive, glossy gig guide. I've been reading Record Collector a bit recently, and some of the reviews there appear to be much better, both in style and observation. Some of the reviewers are musicians ( my old mate Shane Baldwin from Vice Squad contributes every month ), and maybe a bit older, more mature, with nothing to prove as it's an anorak publication.. Then of course, there's the internet.. I know that I've probably heard an album I'm really interested in many weeks before the reviews hit the press anyway. Ahh, nothing like a good rant to start the day off with.. The guys at work had better bloody watch out.. And, relax........ Stu P.S.
