First, New Order resurfaced with the surprisingly vital Waiting for the Sirens' Call, and now Echo and the Bunnymen are back with Siberia, a rousing return that finds co-founders Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant channeling their trademark angst into lush anthems like "Stormy Weather" and one deliciously bitter title track. There are missteps, to be sure -- "What If We Are" is a tribute to the glory of love that would be better suited to the Michael Boltons of the world -- but there is sufficient evidence here that, after nearly three decades, the Bunnymen remain a creative force. For what it's worth, I think Uncut is the best music/movie mag out there so I'm disappointed that this review has fallen wide of the mark. The mag's always had a good word for the band, with 3 or 4 of the staff being big fans, so I pretty much thought a (deserved) 5 star review was a shoe-in. - -- Barry Kristin Smith wrote: > Who decides on the rating? Full stop.' Uh-huh. And the Velvets "Heroin" starts quiet and then goes all noisy and then goes all quiet and then goes all noisy again. Oh, and then quiet." And that's all ya need to know. And the "newsman" on the bloody telly goes all talky and then not talky and then talky again. And the sun goes all up and then downy and then up again. Yeah. More brilliant observations from the fukkin useless English rock press. A pound a word, scale, for these used-up cunts, who "go all smug" but never balance with the wry wit and intelligent observation that usta be the hallmark of the UK rock rags, which is what made 'em brilliant. Barry W. throws down 10 words and they're generally laden with arid hilarity, and a self-effacing knowledge, yet these people get paid to write inane, vacuous filler. They don't MEAN it (maaaaaan) and everyone knows it and no one seems to give a rat's ass. If you've ever happened to read anything I've written, love or hate it, I intended every word of it, as opposed to these off-the cuff, snide, yawnful verbal jerkoffs. (And this has nothing to do with the fact that I think Stormy Weather's a good song, it's about me hating obvious LAZINESS.) All that said, regardless of this review, I'll stand by Mr. Whiting's opinion that, regarding yr overpriced glossy rags, Uncut's the only way to go; it's the only rock rag I read anymore, except for Mojo on occasion, and whoever choses to publish my stuff (which is usually FILTER, who also retain this writer, Mikel, who is tremendous--chekkim.) Speaking of stormy weather--and I'm thinking of N'orlans, heuh--is it too early for Katrina and the Waves jokes?
