Listen to the lyrics and structure of the Flowers tracks and compare with those from the band 20 plus years ago - there's no similarity at all. Can you imagine ''... no in november.... be's out of may...'' coming from Mac's pen/lips in the early days? Or the bluesy style of 'Flowers' ? - sounds more like music written and played by people with a few more years under their belt! Steve G. I got a kick out of reading it! It's a day in the life of ... I wake up at 5.30, leap out of bed, pull the curtains apart and praise God and all the saints for another wonderful day. Then I go back to bed for about 15 minutes. I get up again and smoke three cigarettes and drink three cups of PG Tips. That gives me a more level approach to the day. I might also have a slice of toast with heavy-cut marmalade. Then I have either a very hot or a very cold bath: a cold bath is good for the circulation and a hot one is something of a reward. We have two boys of 2 = but I do my best to avoid all the other early morning activity. Depending on my mood I choose one of three dark suits. I always wear a suit, because I have important work to do and Im not going to go to work in a pair of Bermudas and bright flip-flops. I have my suits made by a tailor in Berwick Street, Soho, called Sam Marcus and Ive discovered a tailor called Richard James who makes beautifully fitted shirts. I kiss the wife and the children goodbye. We live by the sea and I walk along the front to work. It takes seven minutes and its the nicest part of the day. I love the English seaside with all its pebbled beaches and manicured lawns. I grew up in Australia where beach culture seemed to be all about G-strings, sun lotion and tanned bodies. You dont get that in England. My office is a smallish room with a desk on one side and an upright Yahama on the other. In the middle I have a couch with winged sides, an armchair, a standing lamp and a Chinese rug. Also three paintings by Louis Wain. I have another 15 at home. I do lots of reading, so there are books everywhere. I got the furniture from a second hand shop but an acquaintance came round and, thinking Id got the place furnished, said that it looked like a low-rent psychoanalysts flat in Florida. I thought it best not to say anything. The first thing I do is make another cup of strong tea. I will smoke and drink tea continuously until 12 oclock and do done of three things: write, which means writing or staring in to the middle distance; play the piano; or, when Im really desperate, read other peoples stuff. I go back and forth from the piano to the desk, from the desk to the piano. Structure is very important to me. Without structure I cant work. If for some reason I dont get into the office till noon, it throws the whole day out and I become less content, less easy to be around. At 12 o-clock I walk down to the Italian restaurant at the end of my street and order a takeaway penne Napoli. I order the same thing every day - it used to be a tomato omelette. I return to the office, eat at my des and carry on. Despite popular belief, Im not a person who sits around and is miserable all the time. I dont have the luxury. I dont have much time for feelings, to be honest. I think theyre overrated - they get in the way of things. Yes, its true Im known for writing sad songs but to write a sad song gives me great happiness. I think the song has the greatest potential to affect a person in the deepest possible way. I often listen to a piece of music that I find deeply affecting and dont know why. Its a mystery. Its probably taken me a long time to realise Ive been working in an incredibly powerful medium - probably the most powerful medium there is. In the past I wouldnt had an almost obsessive need to attach great importance to a songs lyrics - probably to do with my father being an English literature teacher. Now I think even the most basic, throwaway lyric can have an incredible impact if it happens on the right collection of chords and is sung in the right way. A small alarm clock goes off at five oclock. So, on the dot, I desist from all work. I do a slow walk back along the seafront and take in deep breaths of sea air. Then I open the door to my house and meet the chaos of home life. I play with the kids for an hour, feed them and put them to bed. I also have two 11 year old boys, but one of them lives with his mother in Australia and the other lives with me half the time and with his mother in London half the time. I love the kids and that love is effortless and absolute. It doesnt matter how diabolical they can be. I usually eat my wifes cooking, which is done with love but is a little on the bland side. Then I sit with her and read. Sometimes she moves furniture around. I n fact I havent listened music for a while because shes shifted the CD player and Im not sure where it is. I dont have hobbies and I dont watch television - only a particularly bad book will make me turn it on. At the moment, Im halfway through Dickenss Great Expectations. Its a very warm, funny book. At about midnight I put on my eau de nil striped flannel pyjamas and continue reading in bed - its the only way I get to sleep. At about two oclock I always wake up for some reason, so Ill go out on the balcony and have a fag. Ill maybe look up at the stars or listen to the sea for a few minutes and then Ill go back to bed. ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://bunnymen.nexuswebs.net/ * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * http://www.softskull.com/detailedbook.php?isbn=1-887128-89-6 * http://www.neonhalos.blogspot.com ====================================================================== ------------------------------ End of seven-seas-digest V4 #270 ********************************
