I guess they are famous for 20 minute episodes of the Sopranos. Scott, NYC [sorry, the editing of the original digest thang was all mine] Anyway, I've seen one of these stores in Provo, right next to Brigham Young University's campus. It seemed to be doing great business. But I don't see this movie editing question as much different from the horribly edited movies you get on TV--even cable! Why are they "edited for content"? Because it sells (read: doesn't scare away advertisers). For the creators of this material to get uptight about the Utah company's editing--and they have gotten upset--when they allow their stuff to be chopped up for TV, why that's hypocrisy at its boldest, IMHO. What was the original question? Sorry, my mind wandered a bit. In some ways Utah is just one step up from a theocracy. The leadership of the LDS (Mormon) church holds way too much influence over the (mostly Mormon) state legislature. But that's another topic altogether. For those who aren't familiar -- the directors of the edited movies -- eg Steven Spielberg -- have objected to this company's editing of their works, because the directors rightly claim that the company then becomes an unauthorised editor and presents the work in a way the director may not want it shown. In addition, while most networks make it clear that a film has been "edited for television," *supposedly* these versions make it far less clear. With a/v technology, it'd be easy for a director who so wished to provide a "Mormon English" language option. As to violence and nudity, one in theory could edit for that using the DVD's chapter positioning scheme. The question is -- would the directors want to re-edit their works of art? ===================================================================== Bunnymen Online Presence: http://www.bunnymenlist.com * http://www.bunnymen.info * http://www.bunnymen.com * http://www.fotolog.net/sgtfuzz/ * http://bunnymen.nexuswebs.net/ * http://www.angelfire.com/wy2/discog/ * ====================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2004 16:19:10 -0500 From: Rob Maher Subject: Re: seven-seas Mormon Country I visited Utah a few years back and stayed with a friend in Sandy. I visited Salt Lake City, Park City, the copper mine, etc. It is really beautiful out there. Much different than Southeastern Pennsylvania that's for sure. I'd love to go out there again. We have one of those video chains here too. You have a good point, the movie companies don't have any argument when they let TV stations do the same thing. I just find it kind of odd because if you're the kind of person who is careful about what movies to watch, then I think a movie is either good or it isn't. Seems to me that watching a cut up version is also a bit hypocritical - and it cheapens the art of it as well. If you're going to watch a movie at all, aren't you basically saying that the movie is ok? If I have a problem with a very violent movie, I'm just not going to bother watching it. I'm not going to watch some cheap, cut up, "cleaned up" version. Someone brought up Wal-Mart. Now THERE is hypocrisy. They claim to be this great wholesome organization, and 90% of what they sell is made by slave labor in China, not to mention the fact that they are doing quite a good bit to wreck our economy thank you very much. Sorry, I didn't mean to get so political and religious again. Really I didn't. > From: owner-seven-seas@smoe.org > Reply-To: seven-seas@smoe.org > Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2004 12:33:57 -0800 > To: seven-seas@smoe.org > Subject: seven-seas Mormon Country > > Hey all, > > Thought I'd chime in from Salt Lake City, Utah, concerning Scott's: > > We were touring through Utah summer 2002 and there is a video chain that > advertises family movies -- every movie they rent has had all references to > violence, profanity and nudity cut out of the tape.
